Where to start?

Hi there!
Like a lot of 17 year olds, I would LOVE to get into game development and it is something that i am passionate about. But i have absolutely no prior game development or any scripting experience. So, basically, i would like to know what would be the best way to get started?

Obviously i want to just jump into TGE and make an awesome 3D MMORPG! (But even i know that wont happen yet ;P)

Before anything, should i learn a programming language like C++ (which i dont know anything about)? or what approach would be best?
I dont currently own TGE or TGB, because to me, they cost a lot and i like to make informed decisions first.
Are they even suitable for a beginner like me? or would either of them be too hard?

Any information/advice is really appreciated. Even personal stories about how you got started in making games would be very helpful!

Thanks : )

I'd start with learning torque script. get the basics down, the syntax and everything. will make learning c++ much easier. After you got a good handle on that then you can try some c++.

While I didn't start off with Torque I do think TGB is a great choice for a beginner. I'm only 13 (though I may not talk like it) and haven't been doing this stuff very long so I don't know how good any advice I have is :) If you start with TGB you will learn about TorqueScript and Datablocks and all that and maybe some C++ if you get the Pro version with the source code.

I'd suggest you wait for someone with more experience to help you before making a decision.

Goodluck!

The only advice I can recommend is to start of with what are a) passionate about, b) good at, c) combination of both. Having a solid understanding of the aspect of game development that you are driven to know more about will give you a context to base all other aspects on.

If you are level designer by heart, then grab one of the engines and start making worlds to run around in. If you are a sculptor, then consider making character models and scene objects. If you find that you are good at coding, grab one of the engine demos and start tweaking the scripts to see what changes you can make in the game. If you aren't sure what you want to focus on, then join the masses of ADD infested minds here a GG and pound away at all aspects of one or more of the engines.

Good luck.

Ok, thank you all for your advice. I will take everything into consideration.
Right now i am debating whether to buy TGB & TGB Adventure Kit and learn to make some basic 2d games and then go from there.

Would that be a good idea?

CJ, definitely make sure you try before you buy. Download the TGB demo first. It comes with complete tutorials and documentation to get you started.

The demo can be found here.
