Is torque right for me?

I have been looking at torque for quite a while now and am starting to debate more seriously if I should buy it. I tryed the trial of the Torque Game Builder a while back and I quite liked it but Im wondering if I should like get the Torque Game Engine or Torque Game Builder or Both, I scored a free copy of torque x game builder through the XNA creators club but I dont like the feel of torque x as much as I like the actual torque engine. I am 16 years old with a good grasp on programming and have tryed XNA but I dont have nearly the mathematical, shader, or general knowledge to write my own engine and I have a job now so is there a good way to find out if torque is right for me?

K say I was gonna do 3D would it be better to start off with TGE or TGEA?

@Evan - Download the free TGE or TGEA demos. You don't get the source code, but there is still plenty of opportunity to take the engines for a test run.

@GAMEHACK3R - What part of the documentation do you think is lacking?@Evan - Download the free TGE or TGEA demos. You don't get the source code, but there is still plenty of opportunity to take the engines for a test run.

Either. Some things have improved in TGEa. But the best means of learning Torque is through the resources, since the documentation leaves a lot to be desired for a lot of people, and most of the resources where written for TGE in mind. Learn the scripting language as a lot can be done there that is shared between both engines. As you gain skill in C++ the differences between the engines won't matter in the end, it will just be a question of how modern you want your game to be. There is an upgrade option from TGE to TGEa which will save you a little investment until you feel comfortable with Torque.

K can a link maybe be given for the demos cause the only demos of TGE and TGEA that I can find are just a walk through of there features like a fly around I can never seem to find the demos

Be sure to check out the various documentation landing pages for more information on how to mod the demos.

@Evan - Those are the demos. What you are seeing is a sample project that shows off the features. You can still script, use the GUI Editor (F10) and the World Editor (F11). The only difference between what you download and the full SDK is the source code access.Be sure to check out the various documentation landing pages for more information on how to mod the demos.

Also is there really an upgrade option from TGE to TGEA like you said? I didn't think there was

GameHack3r would be carefull saying it's cheap, for an adult $250 is affordable for something you really want to work with, as a 16 year old, at least when I was 16, $250 was a lot of money. Also is there really an upgrade option from TGE to TGEA like you said? I didn't think there was

Give these a try: CodeSampler.com Torque Game Engine Tutorials. The documentation is good reference, use it for learning the syntax and scripting basics, but these are the best (in my opinion) practical examples that I ever used.

@J Sears: yes, there is an upgrade option - I used it myself from TGE 1.52. And looking at cost of other equivalent engines I would have to say that TGE or TGEa is relatively cheap and affordable, especially for the terms of the license.

Those tutorials are good, albeit dated. Updated tutorials are continually being added to the Official Doc Landing Page.

I don't see the upgrade option on their pages anywhere I thought it was only an option while it was in beta stages to get more people using it at the time
