Rivers and lakes

Hello,

I am creating a relief map for our project and have a question regarding rivers and lakes.

I have been told that it is possible to place rivers on slopes and even create waterfalls.

Does this mean that rivers and lakes can be placed at levels above sea level so that they look more realistic?

Also, can someone please tell me where I can find information to tell us how to place rivers on slopes...or how to change the local water level, if possible. I would like to pass this along to our more technical team members. :)
