Some questions and concerns regarding TGEA?

by Shane09 · in General Discussion · 09/28/2008 (4:04 pm) · 39 replies

Hello, recently seeing some demos of TGEA in actual gameplay, just "Wowed" me. Well, actually, it "Wowed" me in multiple ways. I saw a special effects demonstration, and was like"Woah!". Actually more like, "WoW". The spell casting effects were almost exactly like WoW (World of Warcraft). I saw the range, spell damage, description, spell casting time. One word, AMAZING. I have never took the time before to look at TGEA until now. I had no idea on what I was missing out on. Also, the terrain and water textures are way, way cooler looking then the Torque Game Engine I own (1.4.2). The textures looked like someone took a picture and said it was from Torque. Considering the possibilites of TGEA, I have some questions that should hopefully help me choose which engine to buy.

1) I assume Torque Game Engine 1.4 is super out of date, and they don't make any upgrades for it anymore.

2) Can TGE 1.5 or TGEA have multiplayer gaming on them? Well actually, I know they can. Duh. So what I really mean to ask is, how much players per server could be able to play? Because if one were to create a MMORPG, I think 13 players would be boring. It would need to be more like 13000 :)

3) Is TGEA worth buying? I can get the upgrade for a little bit cheaper, because I already own TGE 1.4.2.

4) What do you prefer, TGE 1.5 or TGEA?

5) Does TGE 1.5 have the ability to create water like this image? Or was this done in TGEA?
http://www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=1656

6) Can TGE 1.5 have the ability to do what I mention in my first paragraph? (spell damage, range, description, spell casting time, etc...)

7) Is TGE 1.4.2 even really worth developing on?

Thank you for taking your time to read this. Thank you x 2 for taking your time to answer my questions (if you do)?

EDIT:

8) I am assuming TGEA can create pretty good graphics, quality graphic GUIs, and great animations without lag?

EDIT:

NOTE: Some of these questions may be referring to Torque Game Engine 1.5+ also.

9) Because I like to put much time into my art/GUIs, I was wondering if instead of using the same boring GUIs that every Torque game (well it seems to be every, such as Minions of Mirth and RealmWars) uses, I wanted every GUI to be created by me and I was wondering if I could do that? I mean instead of using the healthbars, if I could make my own in different shapes and colors, along with all the other buttons, like "Login" buttons and lots of in game buttons that most games seem to be using boring ones. Is it possible to do that so I don't have to use precreated ones that Torque supplies you with? I want my game to be unique and almost impossible to tell that it was made using Torque except for that fact that I will display the logo in the beginning, and end credits.

10) Only Indies have to display the GarageGames logo right? And if this is the case, do I only have to display the logo once? And then every time the user opens up the application they will have to click "Beginning Cinema" to be able to see the GarageGames logo again and what my game is about?

11) How do you change the speed of which the character runs? I have seen lots of games where when the player runs, it look like every step he takes does not match up with the speed. It looks like with 2 steps he already traveled 6 yards. No joke. How do I change this?

Well actually it could be in equivalent in time with Torque. 1) You have to wait for GarageGames to update the engine and fix the bugs, but with my own engine, I can update them on the go. And besides, it can be extremely personalized just to one game that I plan on making when I get some more experience.

Anyways, I am still going to use Torque Game Engine. But I plan on making a special game on my own engine. So don't be suprised if you keep hearing from me, asking questions that have to do with Torque Game Engine, because like I said, I will still be using it.

Thanks

Hey Shane, I read that you are making a game engine. Here are a few tips:

1. These forums are not just for Torque, you can post in it for ALL type's of game engines, including yours.
2. You say that C++ has alot of errors. I would have to disagree, C++ will have no errors if you make it right.
3. If you buy the TNL, then you can put Torque's network library into your MMO engine (if you use C++).
4. Get a team together, because otherwise it could take about 3 years (full time) to make it.
5. Using the GarageGames logo isn't unprofessional, especially if you use GG as your publisher, then you don't need to worry about people thinking why you have their logo.

That's great. I wasn't trying to discourage you. I tried to make an engine of my own once. I gave up and went with torque becouse learning it was faster than rolling my own. Plus, it's already complete and any thing I've needed to mod in the engine has just about all already been done using mods supplied by the community here. :-)

Quote:take a look at the new logos - I personally think they look quite professional and attractive:

What's with the cheesy characters on the logos? Those things are rubbish! I much prefer the older ones.

There should be a TGEA one that doesn't have the characters. (or maybe the zip wasn't updated). I can email it to you if you like.

@Jaimi: that would be great for The TGEa version has the Rockkitball guy standing in front of it. I did like the background and the coloring but the different cartoonish characters representing the engines just doesn't appeal to me.

@Mike - I've sent the logo to your public email.

Quote:Well, I don't like putting the "GarageGames" logo on all my games. No offense to you guys, it just would make my game look sorta, unprofessional.

It is extremely rare to find a game nowdays that doesn't have a logo on it on the professional sector (outside of military contracts or artist concept pieces which usually pay through the nose for splash removal with the majority of the professional and indie engines out in the wild). Especially if using industry standard sound or video technology. So I find the unprofessional idea a bit strange unless it is the concept of the word garage that you dislike.

It's one of the first times I've heard professionalism brought into the discussion. It's usually due to a dislike about the concept of logos or artistic merits that come up in splash screen discussions here and abroad.

Hmmm...
..a logo is the least of your concerns in the big picture bro.

Perhaps you can get permission to create the art for a GG logo used only by your company/business.
I do not know if they allow this but I would be sure to have a killer-piece-of-art ready before you ask. Then they may be more inclined to like the idea.

@Jaimi - I looked at the splash screen zip recently and didn't see the logo without the characters in the new style. Any chance you could forward that TGEA splash on to me too?

(@Shane: Sorry to hijack the thread just to ask that!)

Don't think of it as a lack of professionalism because of having a splashscreen (every big budget, high profile game I've played for years has had one), think of it as showcasing that your game is built off of an award winning and proven game engine.

Will GarageGames let you create your own splashscreen? If they would, that would be pretty sweet.

That's something that you would have to contact licensing about on a case-by-case basis.

For everyone who wanted a splash screen without a character in the logo, we do have one available that looks like this:

68.233.5.139/~transfer/Pics/Simple_Splash.png

You can download it here on the logo page. It's contained in the zip file under the "GarageGames Torque Splash Screens" link.

And as David has already mentioned, if you want to create your own splash screen, you should contact licensing@garagegames.com. Same applies if you don't want to have a splash screen at all. We handle all of those special license queries on a case-by-case basis.

If you're mad enough to make an MMO, you might want to use some readymade code:
http://www.opennel.org/confluence/display/NEL/Home

Nevrax made Saga of Ryzom, which flopped pretty badly, but it seems they're trying to keep it alive by opensourcing bits. I don't understand their business model, but free code is great.

@Eikon - They've updated the splashes, it's now included.

@Deborah - Thanks! BTW - I like these logos a lot. Kudos to the designer!

I'll tell Jason that you guys like his work. He's been doing a TON of graphic artwork for Torque and GarageGames, one of those silent, but deadly artists. ^_^
