Copyright legal rights and questions?

Hello again. I have a few question regarding logo and game protection. First of all, is making something copyright, free? Like being able to put the copyright symbol under all your logos and web pages and game GUIs and stuff like that? I heard you can, but you have to update it every year from Copyright 2008 to Copyright 2009 or whatever year you are moving in to. I am certain a registration or a TradeMark costs money. I live in the state of Florida if that helps. Also, if copyright is free, up to what extent am I protected up to?

Anything you create is automatically copyrighted, but if you register it then you will be protected to the extent of the copyright laws and have proof of copyright. Otherwise it comes down to your word in court rather than existing legal documentation.

You don't have to update you copyright every year, either. You are protected for at least 75 years.

The copyright process is rather painless. Trademarks, however, are much more difficult and expensive to navigate since they are so particular to exactly what you are trying to trademark.
