It's official: Accelerated nVidia Drivers for FreeBSD now avail

by Ryan J. Parker · in General Discussion · 11/08/2002 (7:12 am) · 11 replies

Looks like I'll be booting FreeBSD this evening... hopefully making that somewhat permanent switch now that I'll have accelerated X. ;-)

I'll be commiting some Blender stuff tonight, then I'll finish it under FreeBSD ... so long those nVidia drivers work... :-D

Will freeBSD run linux software and linux games? If so would the Torque linux client run on freeBSD?

It should. There are two ways of doing it I think: 1) run an unmodified linux binary with bsd's linux emulation layer (apparently this doesn't introduce much overhead), or 2) rebuild the client to run natively on bsd. I would be partial to 1 actually, since it means one less set of binaries to maintain, but it still would be worth it to have the code building natively under bsd so that you didn't have to cross compile to linux if you were developing a game.

I wonder why NVIDIA is doing this actually, the linux desktop market is small, but bsd has to be even smaller...

There was a big push at one time to get nVidia to get FreeBSD drivers working... as far as I know, there was one team, myself included, that was trying to write FreeBSD drivers. However, nVidia's got that nasty little 'binary stub'... we tried getting them to work with us, and they did, a little bit, but then did nothing, so it fell to the wayside. Then, we heard of someone else trying to do the same thing... and it looks like he got a lot of support, hell, he's got a website. ;-)... I hear they're trying to please other than just the open source community, though... they obviously want to sell cards.

And yes, you can emulate Linux binaries.

Ryan, you got that site linked by any chance?

I think the world of Nvidia. I think that this release is really cool (although I have yet to use any *bsd). I'm not exactly sure what the reasoning is behind it, but it seems that as enough users request something, nvidia will usually try and help them out. They've done a great job with the linux bins so far.

I think they've put themselves in a great position for the future. They've done all the groundwork, even while the benefits were very small. If you notice, the geforce 3 then the 4 were both supported on Linux almost right away after they came out, probably not at a large expense. They're way ahead of the competition when it comes to the Linux market. I think at first it was more to satisfy high-end user (non-desktop users) who switched to Linux for large projects. Anyways, excellent job by Nvidia, and as long as they keep this up, the keep getting my dollars.

Is Torque able to be compiled in FBSD 5.4 current? or 6.0?

Nothing wrong with ressurecting a 3 year old message if your add-on is on topic, but please don't do so if your post doesn't have anything to do with the original topic :)

There are many threads on various linux compilations in the Compiler as well as the Linux areas.
