3D Fighting Game Creation

by Bruce Wade · in General Discussion · 09/19/2008 (4:12 am) · 11 replies

Hello,

I am currently going to a game development school *Art Institute*. I have started to put together a team of programmers, artist and modelers (20 people so far) for the creation of a 3D fighting game with the fighting style being Muay Thai.

Anyways we were wondering if the Torque Game Engine would be a good fit for this type of project? Or would we be better off making a new engine from scratch?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Bruce

A game engine from scratch requires a solid team and a minimum of 3+ years to make a working engine with basic features; regardless what type of fight you have in mind for your game, you need to start from the grounds up and learn the tools (learning takes less time than making an engine and teaching other people how to use it).

Good luck!

It's way easier to modify the torque engine that write a new one. You will have to do some modifications to implement hand to hand attacks though. Someone made a wrestling game with torque and it looks pretty good. I'll see if i can find a link.

Aye, creating your own engine from scratch will probably be much more trouble than it's worth -if you're just looking to make a game. Now, if you're a programmer and you're looking to understand 3d math, and engine creation concepts/approaches, then go for it. But I would use an engine to make a game for sure.

Is this a project for school? Or something you're looking to put on your portfolio?

I love Muay Tai. I'm sure you've seen Tony Jaa in Ong Bak and The Protector. Awesome stuff. If you end up going with Torque keep us updated on your progress! Would love to see a fighting game come out on Torque.

Yeah I sure have seen Ong Bak and The Protector, also Ong Bak 2 is coming out pretty quick "4 December 2008 (Thailand) "

Regarding the project, I have been in Muay Thai for 5 years and have also have been programming for about 6 years. I went to DeVry in 2002 for a BA in Computer Information Systems. After working in the business tools programming for a few years, I new it was time to get into my passion for games. So I have been in school for the last year learning how to transfer my skills to game programming.

The project is actually for a portfolio / lunching a company if all goes well. I have many connections in Muay Thai and one of the bigest names in the sport has interest in this game "Mike Miles". This game has the potential of turning into an "NHL, NFL, or Soccer" type of game with new releases every year just because of how the sport is.

I have seen the wrestling game on youtube thanks for the link. My only question is the game looks pretty cartoony how is torque with handling Maya Models and Zbush for the LOD?

We would like to make the game fighters as realistic as posible. Not sure if you have heard about the Art Institute but they're known to be one of the top schools for there 3D Modelers and Artists.

You'll be fine graphics wise. I'd suggest using TGEA for its shader effects - will give you that next gen look. For Homebrew, I think that's just the art direction he was after.

Check out these two videos to see what TGEA can handle:

Thanks those to demo's prove that torque can handle the graphics.

As for learning TGEA I have the book Game Programmers Guide To Torque will that provide me with enough information to learn TGE and/or TGEA? If now is there a different resource that is recommended when learning the engine?

@Bruce Wade - The GPGT has a lot of useful information in it, and is also a great reference book. However, I would highly recommend going through the links that Michael P. provided, as they are specific to TGEA, and will help you get the most out of the engine. Michael has been revamping the docs and organization, and the layout and information is much better than it used to be.

@Michael Perry, that first link appears to be down. Is it just me?

Hi Bruce!

As this is melee related I just wanted to share my knowledge of the 'best weapons melee thing' Ive ever played!

Rune

Released C++ Headers

Some of the guys made a boxing mod, others some other melee tweakings and so forth.

You could try search youtube for rune: halls of valhalla vids to see the awesome pace and melee stuff. The game has app 16.000 possible ways to combine the skeletal animations...

Feel free to spam me at msn (christian -@- zaphir {d.t} dk if you need contact with some of the modders ;)
