Problems exporting materials in Houdini

by Joshua Parker · in Artist Corner · 09/15/2008 (9:17 pm) · 5 replies

I know this may be a dumb question, and it is possible I overlooked something obvious, but when I export a model using Houdini to a .dts file and open it in Show Tool Pro, the model is there but completely white. There are no textures present in the materials panel. I followed the Houdini video tutorial and noticed at the end when the author exported the stock Orc with the dancing animation, that his model was also entierly while in Show Tool Pro. Has anyone else run into this problem and is there an easy solution to it?

P.S. the check box was selected to allow materials to be copied to the export directory.

I posted the same question in the Houdini forum. The answer in my case was that the material needs to be a Torque Material.

Thanks. I tried veiwing the Houdini Forums last night, but was unable to get to them. i was able to from work this morining and I found your article along with another one concerning the same issue. I will try this tonight when I get home. My next issue will be determining what I have to update to keep Houdini from crashing on me, especialy after imports or opening files. I would hate to have to go back to animation and exporting in Milkshape.

It looks like there are different materials depending on the type of rendering you want to use. For example a Mantra material cannot be used on a RenderMan or a Torque. Of course I am new to Houdini and this could all be hogwash.

Question is: If there are Torque materials, then were do we find them in Houdini? Do we need to import them or something? Or use the Mantra or RenderMan ones?

Thanks for the help.

In you SHOP network[or a SHOP Node], drop a Torque Shader Node...bottom of the list. Without this 'special' Torque Shader Node, you will continue to get the 'missing' bitmap. I am uncertain if any of the other Shader Nodes available will export, hence the specific Shader for Torque.

Good luck!
