Why these extensions?

by Tyler Slabinski · in General Discussion · 09/14/2008 (1:23 pm) · 9 replies

Ok, I am asking why Torque needs to use these extensions:

.cs
.dso
.dif
.dts
.gui

Now before there is confusion, let me just say, I know what the files do. But I am just wondering why they have these extensions.

I know that .gui means Graphical User Interface, but I don't know what the other ones stand for. This isn't an important question, I am just wondering what it is.

Uhm, if mainMenu was to be executed how would the engine know if it was .cs or .gui to execute if not suffixed. And how would it know to prelight a object if it dident know if it was shack.dif or just shack.dts etc...

Just like when you travel to Paris; would be nice to know if it was the main one in France, or the really minor one here in Denmark ;)

From my understanding:

cs = C script
dso = dynamix script object?
dif = dynamix interior format
dts = dynamix (don't know what exactly the ts stands for)
gui you got.

@Christian

Sorry, but I know that kind of stuff, my question was what the extensions mean.

@Mike

Thanks, that is exactly what I was wondering, although I am still wondering what .dts stands for:

I think it means dynamix torque shape.

The word "torque" wasn't around when it was dynamix, so, nope that's not it. The source makes references to "three space" though if I remember correctly (don't have it here in front of me).

DTS = Dynamix Threespace Shape

3space was what we called our original 3d engine that we used all the way back in the Arctic Fox on Amiga days. It had its roots in Damon Slye's "Stellar 7" that he wrote for the Apple II.

Wow--never knew Damon wrote Stellar 7--I loved BattleZone in the arcade, and when S7 came out it was an instant buy!

Ahh, the memories...

If that is what DTS stands for, I think they should have made it D3S.
