Extrude tool doesnt maintain the mesh?

Just a question. I'm trying to give constructor another go but having some issues.
If I create a cube and select a face, use the exttrude tool it looks like it works but the extruded portion of the model is actually it's own entity. In other words the vertecies are not welded between the original cube and the extruded object.
Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? Or did I just screw something up?
Thanks in advance.

So that also answers my next question as to why I cant weld vertexes :)
Is there a method of cleaning up my model to ensure a "watertight" fight on the edges?
It seems like I should probably do snap to grid for the entire "structural" brush layout then I can go to town with detail brushes..
Thanks so much for your time.

Not really - just by slicing, snapping to grid, etc.
