Question about scale

I'm new to the concept of modeling space mathematically, and especially how torque models space, but what I have done is make models smaller to represent a larger space, and my question is:

What considerations are there in making models smaller to make the world look larger?

Is there a significant argument against doing such a thing?

I believe the RTS kit uses small models to achieve the same effect, I don't have the kit to say for sure.
