The $10 Indie Casual vs The Free Flash Arcade

Hi,
Not sure the best place to post this question, but here seemed to be a good start. I've played some pretty impressive freeware games. Games that you just know the developers poured their heart, soul and love of gaming into. Now here I am, playing this game for free in a browser, a nameless faceless player that will not have given a dime to the talent that created this game.
On the flip side, you can find many games that to download at a low cost. Many indie titles from $6-10+ in just about every flavor imaginable. My real question is what makes the difference between those developers who chose to market their games and those that put them out for free? Is it just about giving back to the gaming community? Or is there something more too it?
I'll admit, I aspire to create fun, entertaining games that people will be happy to spend a few dollars on. What keeps them from the free download just a google search away?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Whether you want to give your time and effort away for free is really the distinction. There are a ton of people in the Open Source community who get paid good money at their days jobs and don't mind giving away their effort and free-time to the masses.

It's just a different, less direct way of taking your money. =)
