GarageGames Group on Vimeo

Hey everybody!

We've been using Vimeo to host a the Torque videos on our site. I've already had some of you make me a contact on Vimeo, but we decided to take it a step further and create a GarageGames group on the site. If you have a Vimeo account, feel free to join the group here.

Feel free to add Torque-related videos to the group or just subscribe to see what the GG community is up to. To add your videos to the group's stream, go the video's Vimeo URL, click on the "add" tab in the upper right hand corner and check the "GarageGames" group box after you've become a member.

So why should be excited about Vimeo? We've added Vimeo functionality to all our blogs, resources, etc. If you want to add Vimeo videos to something you post on GarageGames.com, use the following format:

[vimeo=(# of vimeo video) width=(#) height=(#)]

So an example (without the square brackets):

vimeo=1054612 width=640 height=480

Note: You must include the width and height in order for the tags to work.

Looking forward to seeing more videos of people's work!

I like the look of weGame. The site looks very nice, and videos have good quality. I just signed up for it, the site is nice and simple, and the group system seems very easy. Even if we don't use it for Torque videos, I know I'll keep checking out their site.

I just discovered that archive.org also allows uploads of the research/educational type. When you upload there, they create lower quality versions of your (possibly hi-def!) video, including an embeddable Flash control.

Just passing by to mention that the enforcement of the ridiculous new rules reached by now many respected Indies like 2DBoy and Wolfire Games.

While the GG staff keep using Vimeo for its video quality, I would like to mention that the YouTube HD option is really good by now.

I'll probably have to go YouTube also, as they took 2 of my five videos down, though they were obviously development videos. Having read through the comments of the staff on Vimeo today about this issue, I'm not very impressed with their logic in all of the matters. I understand that they had some scaling issues, but the way their rule is phrased and the way that they apply it are too different for me to want to drive any traffic their way.

Besides, YouTube does have a bigger community, which means more exposure...

Ted, I'd be interested to see which of your videos were removed and which remain. When you get them moved over to YouTube, post back here about them.

@Russell: The two were videos of a bot looting demonstration and video of a lake freeze effect demo. I was pretty forthright in my comments about them being development videos, and the other videos that have not been removed are no different. Go figure. But, I just look over YouTube and the HD offering seems to be kind of automatic, so I'm going to create an account for my game stuff over there.

So GG is no longer using Vimeo?

GarageGames is indeed still using Vimeo. For the launch of the new site, we consolidated all of our vimeo links into one account (they used to be spread across three different employees).

We've officially become a PLUS member and talked one-on-one with Vimeo, so our videos are not flagged to be removed. We know this is a problem for non-PLUS members, however, and understand the move to other hosting sites. This is why we now support other non-vimeo movies in blogs (such as youtube).

After their initial announcement, Vimeo officially amended their policy on videogame content:

"Video game developers may post videos of their work provided they cite their involvement in the description of the video (maps and mods to commercial games don't count)."

They do add:

"No commercial videos, which means videos selling a product or service" and "Businesses may not use Vimeo to promote their business in any way."

Ted, did you follow these rules?

@Rusell, please read this blog on Wolfire Games and you'll see that those are not been applied correctly, or not been applied at all.

In a nutshell: in the case of Wolfire (a plus cutomer as well), they do "design tours" videos about games design, among the videos of their own games.

In the case of 2dboy, they just deleted the videos without any warning, as the originial rules said.

Apparently, there are a special set of rules, depending on customer, or moderator, or whatever.

The whole thing was, and remain, a total nonsense.

@Deborah - thanks for the info and reply. :)

@Russell: As a matter of fact I did. The email states in part:

Quote:Vimeo does not allow porn, commercial videos, gaming videos, videos that incite hatred, or videos that you did not make yourself ("I have permission from the creator" does not count as making it).

"Gaming Videos"
That can only be it, because I'm not in any position to advertise my game yet, and won't be for several months to come.

It's much easier for me to go to YouTube and host there rather than pay money to Vimeo which is a (now semi-)hostile environment to my videos. They have their reasons, and that's fine, but I have options, and that's even better :)

I am doing this as a test. For some reason, youtube can't even upload my videos. Wegame looks solid though, hopefully it works...
