Dave's Fry-Up

Hi guys,

Long time since I've done much more than a brief skim over this part of the forums! Looks like there is some really cool stuff going on, so I'll make sure I check in more frequently. Anyway, thought I'd post up some screens and a video link to a daft little game project I've been working on with an artist friend.

Its called Dave's Fry-Up and it actually has a rather odd history behind it. Originally I did it back when I was a degree student in my second year. We were tasked with creating a game using SDL and get it running on the PS2s we had in one of the labs. Everyone was creating some sort of space shooter clone, or finding sprites to do beat'em ups with, I thought that was kinda boring and unimaginative. Hence I came up with the idea of Dave's Fry-Up, a series of mini(tiny) games all in kid-crayon type graphics and loosely tied together with a silly story involving an enemy called "Evil Quiche Man". No really, you did read that right. The games were super simply mechanics wise, requiring only one or 2 buttons to play on the PC, or the sticks on the PS2 pad.

Coincidentally, I did really really well that module and my game was even used on the open days to show potential students that not everything you make has to be pong ;)

Anyway, heres a few screenies of it nowadays, I might upload the old images later too if anyone is interested.

In this level you have to frantically hammer your spacebar to power the magnet and attract the flying pig down. Believe it or not there really is a story behind this but I'll keep that under wraps for a while :)

In the following two shots you're running back and forth with your frying pan trying to catch the eggs as they fall. They chicken "lays" an egg every time it gets scared by the foghorn on the right of the screen.

As a little side note, all this was done within about 2 days of work. Theres a total of 5 mini games and a boss. Using TGB I did the original prototypes for the minigames (all 5) in one day. Now its the process of making "nice code" (Behaviors rock btw, I hope this sort of concept makes its way into Torque2 without much dilution) and getting proper artwork in. TGB is an awesome product and I hope to be using it a heckuva lot more in the future!

Ciao ;)
