Torque License is bad?

by Adib Murad · in General Discussion · 10/19/2002 (12:24 am) · 15 replies

About one hour ago, I read a post in the Game Ideas forum entitled "making a game for fun". At some point, members began to complain about the license rules of the engine. Some said that Garage Games wanted intellectual property of our games, or some kind of royalty.

They were referring to Torque as "V12", probably the name of a previous version. My question is: would their disagreement with the Torque license remains? If yes, would somebody point me where are the traps on it?

I read the License Agreement entirely more than once (the first was when I bought it, of course), and I can't find any "share of our profits", "control of our intellectual property" stuff... Would somebody point me that (specially the Associates)?

Trust your own reading and understanding of the licence.

I think you're reading bad press about the older version of the license. Here's a post on the new from around when it came out.

but I'm sure there are more if you search the forums. I believe the old license is still in the "help" for the demo app and/or Realm Wars if you want to see the differences, which are huge.

since i am in india torque engine costs me about Rs 5000.
it is a heavy price and i can't afford it.
so license fee should cost less.

@Akshara:
less??? My god... if they sold it for less they'd give it away for free. I can understand its a lot of money for you... but if they sold it for less there would be absolutely no barrier and this site would probably turn into a playground for kids...

Jeff, thanks for the link. So, I was right about the license, it changed since that forum thread.

Akshara, this license fee is very low. I've been searching for about a month for engines over the web, and Torque is a great deal. You can license NDL's NetImmerse for US$300,000 if you wish... no royalties...

You can also use a free engine, there's some pretty cool (like Crystal Space) in the web. But I could spend about R$380 of my brazilian currency in Torque, and I'm sure it was the right purchase.

Akshara, the US$100 price of torque is VERY cheap to us. If this is around 5000 of your currency (I assume rupies?) and it's too much for you, what is the average daily or hourly wage for a programmer in India?

Just curious...

Jeff, just to satisfy your curiosity, a Java guy here in Rio de Janeiro costs about US$7.8 an hour.

Life is cheaper here, but of course people are better paid in USA than in the third world.

$7.80... So if you work a forty hour week, you get $312 a week. If you can manage to save, say, 5% of that a week for Torque, then you'd get the necessary money (say, $125 to cover any international non-sense) in a little more than 8 weeks. (That'd be $15.60 a week for Torque, if I'm not mistaken.)

So, sure, you'd have to save a little bit, but you'd get it in the end... and that's the important thing, right? ;)

Edit: Yup. Sorry, my bad. Made the wrong example. Still, I think that it's clear that if you can spare even a small portion of your income for a few months, you can get the engine... And if not, well, maybe you should join a project that's willing to buy you a license, or rethink your priorities...

This is true but Adib wasn't complaining about the cost, Akshara, from India was. I'm sure the pay rate is probably much less there.

The price is good.
I could not complain, as I already bought it...

Me neither! I was more wondering about the possibilities of "off-shore" help for my game if I can afford their help...

Just a curiosity to finish this money subject: today I payed my credit card bill, and Torque was exactly R$367, brazilian currency. The US Dollar is cheaper now, and still falling, because the presidential run is over... it's market, you know...
