Need a little push....

Greetings,

I have spent most of the day (and weekend) trying to research if torque 2D is what I am needing to accomplish what I am wanting but I have not been able to get a clear cut answer that would make me want to get the licenses for it. So.. I am needing a little guidance or a push (if you will) because at the current rate, I will be hiring someone to create a 2D engine but I could probably do it myself cheaper than what I would be paying for someone else to create it.

I am needing a 2D engine where I can create a walkaround environment for an already existing winform application that would be written in C#. What basically I would be doing is replacing a chat environment with a 2D environment (what you would find in say rpgmaker xp) and then all aspects of the application (or game) would be built into this 2D environment (such as, I walk into a building and can buy a, b, and c products). I play X game with Y person. This means that network capabilities (multiplayer) would have to be written. Basically I would imagine that if it is written in C#, there would not be anything that would be restricting my ability to accomplish my objectives.

I do not intend to port to XNA though future games and products could be which means the engine would have to be flexible enough (this much I know torque can do). If anyone could recommend any kind of books or confirmation that Torque is C#-able or any examples I would greatly appreciate it. In the mean while, I will continue to research....

On a side note, I do understand that Torque X is C#-able but since I am new to this concept, I am wanting to make sure that I can do everything that I would need before I buy several products.

Probably the best person who can answer whether Torque X is right for you is...well you. I am a HUGE proponent of try before you buy. I would suggest that you check out the demo version of Torque X (available here). The binary version of the engine is completely free, meaning you can script against it, but you don't have access to the full source code; for that you can buy Torque X Pro later.

If you need editor tools (which we strongly recommend, but is not necessary), we also have Torque X Builder available to make 2D games. Again, you can try it out by downloading the 30-day free trial, which you can use with the free binary version of the engine.

There are a bunch of getting started tutorials. You can find them here as a link to a .zip file to this snapshot.
