Why is Releasing Source Code A Problem?

by Jerane Alleyne · in General Discussion · 06/08/2001 (11:29 am) · 6 replies

There are quite a few people waiting for the release of the source code for No One Lives Forever, and it looks like they will be waiting for quite some time. I believe it was stated that the sales of the game didn't justify the release of the source code.

I was wondering if sales of a game determine whether its source code is released, or is this a mostly isolated case? In either case, why would sales affect the release of the source code? I think that one of the reasons Half Life is still one of the top selling games is not only because its is a great game, but the number of playable mods and conversions due to the release of the source code. I'm not saying that releasing the source cdoe is the saving grace of games, but I think it does open up more possibilities for a game. Lithtech is pretty developer-friendly from my experience with it, so I don't see any problem there...

Any speculation as to why this is an issue with this game (NOLF) or any other game that might be in the same or a similar situation?

The NOLF code is pretty decent, and certainly very mod-worthy.

I'm sure the developers would love to release it, but ultimately it's the suits who decide... and we all know how many wonderful ideas suits come up with. :-)

Yeah, but You'd have to pay $500 bucks for it :o

I don't think everyone is willing to pay that for just the NOLF source code, and I'm not sure the Lithtech Trial allows you to use the NOLF source code for making a mod :)
