Stuck Animation : TX3D

I have created a character in milkshape, exported using the "Torque game engine DTS" exporter.
The animations work most of the time, but everynow and again the animation will freeze in the run sequence.
I have looked at the position property in the FSM and it is definitely cycling, but no animation.
Repeatedly trying to move from one sequence to another tends to eventually unfreeze it, ie going from run to idle.
I havent tried using Maya yet to do the modelling in, as I dont want to have to recreate the sequences again, I'm also just trying to get up to speed with it as well.
I thought it may have something to do with the polygon count of the character, which is high at 20k at the moment, but reducing this to a simple block character with a few dozen polygons didnt seem to help.
Anybody got any ideas?, this is driving me insane....
