Software license Xsi

I'm a bit confused about something hopefully someone here will know the anser. Xsi offers a free reduced version of their software called mod tool. Am I right in thinking this is free but if you use it to create content for a game inteded on selling commercially then you would have to upgrade to the costly version of the software?

Correct. Mod Tool is for non-commercial use only. However, there are additional restrictions like a max triangle count of 64000. If you like the package, Foundation is really cheap and includes virtually all of XSI that is relevant to game development.

(Unfortunately, your post seems truncated)

Ok, my definition of "cheap" may be a little skewed here. I was thinking in terms of value for your money and Foundation is really hard to top here, especially since it isn't a non-commercial license.

Yeah I dont know what happened with my post. Youre right it is cheap in terms of value for money but I cant make it on my salary. Am I right in thinking that blender is free and acceptable for commercial products? I think I might look into using blender instead.

Yes, you are absolutely right about Blender. It has its weak parts (I for one could never get myself to like the material system), but it also has a lot of strengths. Also, while the interface may appear daunting at first, most do find it to make for a highly streamlined workflow that all in all gives a highly enjoyable experience.

Blender also has some bleeding edge stuff that sometimes you won't even find in the other major 3D packages, like e.g. multi-resolution modeling. One thing that I think completely and totally sucks about Blender, though, is the renderer but for game development, one could certainly live with that.

You're definitely better off with Blender than with buying some crap low-cost package. IMHO either go for one of the industry-standard packages or use Blender.
