Applying a normal map to 2d sprites

I really love this feature in torque X and was able to produce some amazing effects with the normal maps. Is it possible? If so what is the likelihood of it happening? If I owned the pro versions of both would a programmer be able to manipulate the code of torque X so that TGB could use it?
