Which engine are you talking about? TGE, TGEA, or TorqueX (or do they all share this issue)? From a cursory thought (and I'm not very familiar with the lighting system), it sounds like the shadows are two depth buffers that are not combined but instead rendered independently. Is one of the shadows a "baked in" shadow of the lightmap and a second one a dynamic shadow? Are they both dynamic shadows? Are they both baked into the lightmap?

I believe TGEA and TGE share the same issue (TorqueX may also). From what ive seen, its only 2 dynamic shadows but it could be any combination with a dynamic shadow being present. Lightmap shadows are fine and never mix, but the dynamic ones do.

In that image, I am standing in the shadow of the polysoup base and you see the two shadows of the character model. I'm thinking that layering of shadows is what you are talking about, right?

I think we might be looking at a similar issue since I was standing in the shadow of the polysoup base and blending two separate shadows with its shadow in a similar fashion as those two are blending. My screenshot sucked, though. Yours is much clearer.
