sound recorder program

Does anyone know a freeware sound recorder program that's available for download? I found a bunch of shareware ones, but they only record for a total of 40 seconds or so.
All I need is a program that can take input from a microphone and save it as a .wav file and doesn't stop working after some amount of time.

I would really hate to have to buy something (too many college debts).

Not sure what OS you are using, but windows comes with
a sound recorder that can save files as .wav's.

Another Free windows (and maybe others, it's Open Source :)) solution, that is also VST compatible is Audacity
I've been tinkering with it, and so far, I'm quite impressed... 8p

Thanks. I'll take a look at those. Someone else suggested that I take a look at Silent Bob at http://www.silent-bob.de/en/, which seems to work, but it's a little goofy. So I think I'll look around a little more.

I'm actually using Windows, but I could only use the Windows recorder to record sounds my computer was making not sounds that were coming from my microphone.

However, I think one of the shareware programs I was trying (that stops working after a while) changed some of my settings. Maybe it will work now. I'll try it just to see.

If your running in Windows 98 you can always check out Protools free.

I've been using Audacity.

I do have Windows 98, but I'm about to get a new computer. So I don't think I'll try Protools. But it looks pretty cool.

While audacity works well for the initial recording in, I do not like it for manipulation of sounds.

I concur. Audacity isn't very useful for manipulating the sounds after you've recorded them.

But it's very easy to use, and I don't work with sound much.

So I would suggest it for programmers, etc. who need a few effects, but not for sound professionals.

If you are searching the web for sounds, I very much recommend getting the findsounds palette.
