Confused about TorqueX choices and future plans

by Mark Joyal · in Torque X 2D · 05/20/2008 (8:19 am) · 2 replies

I'm a bit confused about what download/package is what and I'm hoping someone can clarify for me.

As I understand it TorqueX and Torque X Builder are separate products, with Torque X being the engine and TXB being a handy-dandy editor/gui. Is that correct?

The current version of both products is 2.0?

A new version of BOTH products is in the works which will support 3D?

If there any sort of release dates, even vague ones for the 3D versions? <-- this is the more important question as I don't want to throw $250 on the engine/TXB only to have the 3D versions released a few months later, especially since the 3D products are of more interest to me.

It looks like you have most of the answers right. Torque X is the Engine and Torque X Builder is the scene editor. Both products are at 2.0 and work on top of XNA 2.0. However, Torque X does have full 3D support. The only thing still in the works is the 3D scene editor (to compliment the existing 2D scene editor). That is coming very very soon, probably sold separately from the 2D scene editor. One last twist... the Torque X engine is completely free! You can buy the full engine source code with the"Pro" license and you can buy the scene editors. You can download the engine for free, play with the 3D samples, and get to know the 3D framework. Then, once the 3D scene editor is released, you'll be all set to use it. Hope this helps...

I wasn't aware that the 2.0 version of the engine had 3D support. That was very helpful. Thank you!
