Very confused about the different Torque X versions

by Brian · in General Discussion · 05/15/2008 (9:31 pm) · 3 replies

I'm confused about your Torque X product line(s). I downloaded Torque X 2.0, but it only seems to come with the Torque 2D Builder. Is there a Torque X 3D Builder somewhere? This is primarily what I'm looking for.

Also, on your Torque X Engine product page, there are links to "Torque X", "Torque X Pro", and "Torque X Builder" -- what are these?

I appreciate the tools you are offering us, but the way the products are presented and explained is very confusing. Any help clarifying these would be welcome.

I am sure others will chime in here and add to this thread, but I want to take an opportunity to try to clarify a few things and also to point you towards a few different resources.

First, regarding Torque X 3D Builder, please head on over and have a look at John Kanalakis' Blog(s). There is a lot of info there detailing the progress on the 3D editor, which is currently in development - and already looking awesome by the way! Can't say when it will be released, but can say for sure that it will blow you away :D

Next up, let's talk about the various flavors of Torque X and what they mean. I'm going to rip these from the product info page since they do a pretty good job of explaining things :

Torque X - Experimenting with the technology, new to game development
Grab the FREE binary and TXB for a total of $100 if you qualify for our Indie discount. Get used to writing your own components and working with the WYSIWG editor. When you're ready, give importing 3D assets a try and see what you can do with the FPS demo.

Torque X Pro - Some programming experience, want to make a game
You're probably a candidate for our Indie discount, so grab Torque X Pro and TXB Indie for a total of $250. You get source code for the engine and the 2D WYSYWIG tool and should be well equipped to make your first game. Add a Creator's Club subscription from Microsoft to the mix and you can deploy to the Xbox 360!

Torque X Builder - Torque X Builder (TXB) is a set of tools designed to work with Torque X and Torque X Pro. TXB is built upon the famous Torque Game Builder editor and allows for the visual construction and modification of games. TXB supports many of the features that users of TGB have become used to, such as the placement of sprites and scrollers. Additionally, it integrates Torque X's component system and provides a library of pre-built components to work with, as well as allowing for the placement and editing of lights, and other features. Download the trial version or buy it today at the Torque X Builder product page.

In a nutshell, Torque X gets you the binary, Torque X Pro gets you the source code, and Torque X Builder is the Toolset you use to build games. Torque X Builder is very similar to Torque Game Builder, and in fact, comes with the purchase of TGB (and vise-versa I believe).

I hope this helps a little. Let me know if I can further clarify anything.

I'm glad someone explained this. I was wondering the same thing.

Yes I definitely agree that GG could stand to have one page describing ALL the great products, bulleting the key features and comparing each of the respective products to the others. These simple USP's could also be expandable revealing more detailed information for advanced users as well as telling why these features would be worth investing in. I recently revisited GG to see what new updates there are and was temped to upgrade my TGB to TGBPro but could not find any clear description of it. I do miss the origional GG.com design. QQ

Even though, Thanks for your tireless work and the monsters they create GG guys!! :D
