You may have seen it before but it's the first I've seen it! Have a look at the screenshots link at the bottom of the page.

Get a life, get a job, and front the damn $50 to get the real version of quake, stop being cheap bastards. This is utterly disqusting and I am ashamed to have looked at it.

maybe its just me, but I couldn't see S**T! Yay, a bunch of random characters! You know, the whole free source thing is a great long-running joke that sometimes produces a punchline or two. The latest: Textbased Quake. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAGet a life, get a job, and front the damn $50 to get the real version of quake, stop being cheap bastards. This is utterly disqusting and I am ashamed to have looked at it.

The existance of a textmode quake has nothing to do with money, paying for the game, or anything else related to that.
There is nothing "sad" or "disgusting" about it. All it is is the video output of quake converted to text(in realtime) - If you bothered to look at the screen from far away, you'd most likely see an image, which is generated by combinations of text characters.
I'd dread to think what your imagination is like.

and it's another way to have fun! loosen up for a change man.
and btw, it's open source not free source =)
(and since open source is the way all software is moving I suggest you get with the program =)

Jeremy: it's not about being cheap... it's about seeing what can be done with an engine and someone's programming skills.and it's another way to have fun! loosen up for a change man.

The related discussions were about open source, that's why I brought it up, and which led me to believe that this was about open source. Hey, no doubt it is a challenging task to program, but they are advertising this as an alternative and not a novelty like it really is. I can see that being more of a headache than an enjoyable game. And open source isn't "the way of the future" it is the trendy thing to do if ur a programmer. Programmers gotta eat too you know.

They eat, they even charge for the software (if you use MySQL for commercial development, you should pay for a license), and it's a full time job.
How many times are we going to have to tell the public that Open Source doesn't mean free as in free beer ??
Sure, instead of forcing you into a loop of pay for a license, pay for upgrades ('cause if you don't, they don't support you anymore), etc. they rely on the honesty of their users...
And obviously, it's working, which makes me glad to have real world cases of a more gentle outlook on business and its effects on life actually being more than a flash in the pan...
Sorry to Melv for posting this in this thread,
