Tutorial for making a Wii Game?

by Alex Strand · in General Discussion · 05/13/2008 (11:20 am) · 4 replies

After I make my Game I'm thinking about making a version of it for the Wii. See, I play this kids game called ROBLOX (And yes, I enjoy it.). I have a few friends on that game that have Nintendo Wii's. And when I told them I can make games for the Wii they asked if I could one.

I want to try even though I don't have a Wii. But my Friend does, And he'll probably let me use it to test my game.

Also, Are Wii points bought with real currency like InstantAction Tokens? Or are they a virtual currency that you obtain by completing games, Etc.

Because if they were bought with real Currency, Wouldn't that conflict with my Indie License?

Nintendo doesn't have a hobbyist outlet on the Wii like Microsoft does with the Creator's Club on the Xbox. To make a game for the Wii you have to become a licensed developer with Nintendo and pay for a devkit from them, which is what the game is tested and built on, so you wouldn't be able to use your friend's Wii for testing.

Yes, Wii points are bought with real currency just like IA tokens and Microsoft Points. You are able to sell games you create with your Indie license, so long as your yearly revenue does not exceed $250,000. At that point a Commercial license is required.

Quick clarification however--the Torque for Wii license is separate and above the standard Torque license, and you will need to contact us when you are ready for purchasing that license.

What if I'm going to be the only one playing the game? I decided I'm going to get a Wii, And I have an idea for a game that I could play when I'm bored.

Then the Homebrew solution is for you. You will most likely not get approved by Nintendo to purchase a devkit (between $2000 and $10,000) to play around the house by yourself. But at least you won't have to pay horrendous cert costs on top of the otherwise miniscule devkit cost!
