You Need More Payment Options

by David Robert Pemberton · in General Discussion · 05/07/2008 (2:56 am) · 37 replies

Hi,
After much time examining Torque and seeing if it was the engine I need,
I have finaly decided that it is. so I have come to order it.

Now I find I can only use a Credit card (don't have or have access to) or
printed order form with Check or Money Order in USD.. (my printers bust and was eather Torque or a new printer) bugger..

Isn't there acess to other payment options?
PayPal springs to mind, I know some people hate it but I usualy use it when ordering things from the US.

hmm Money Order.. now that means a trip to the bank to see if I can get an 'international money order', try getting this order printed out, send it to the US from the UK and wait. The thought of all this messing about is putting me off.

wouldn't just paying by another method that accepts international payments be easier?
Not only easier but you will get more business if people overseas can just buy stuff instead of going threw all this and then having to wait as well..

I see these sort of complaints often on many forums attached to companies selling things over the 'net.
My reply is always that getting a debit card isn't hard. If you have a bank account, the bank should be able
to give you a Visa/Master debit card attached to it. My bank was hard to talk to because some of the employees
didn't understand what I was looking for, but when I figured out they called theirs "Visa Classic", everything was fine.

My ATM card says "Visa Electron", and has a 16-digit Visa number, an expiry date and that three-symbol code.
Works just great with GarageGames, Steam, Stardock and many other companies in the USA.

I don't trust PayPal entirely. They run their business with all the benefits of a bank for themselves, but none of the
usual customer protection you'd expect. There are numerous stories about PayPal holding back money because
they find the amount "suspicious". Maybe a merchant account won't have those issues, but most people just want
a damn account to pay with. There are also extra fees above what the Visa/Mastercard would have, both for the
buyer and seller. It seems they charge double on any transaction, and it's a percentage of the amount.
My bank, on the other hand, takes a flat fee (a minimal amount) for all Visa transactions. Judging from my latest
bank statements, it doesn't seem like they delay any exchange fees for going from one currency to another.

In short, get yourself a debit card and learn to love it :)

@Ronny, What you have to remember is that not everybody lives in a place (meaning country) where what you are saying is true.

And although its not my case (personally I have bank account, debit card, credit card, and even paypal) what you comment its certainly NOT true for many people in my country, and neighbor countries. The typical example of a person here that is a potential GG customer, but cant easily have a credit card is the average university student. Besides, note that the local debit cards are usually NOT available to internation transactions (that last was my case for a time).

And a little disclaimer: Im not supporting paypal specifically, but More Payment Options in general; would be a good step for GG.

I Have a Bank account, Debit card and PayPal account,
the problem is my bank uses the European Debit Card Maestro,
this card is usable anywhere in Europe but not the USA..

The 3 options I have have been good enough to get me most things including subscriptions to most of the popular MMORPG's without the need of a credit card.

P.S. My International money draft is swannig its way across the atlantic, cost approx $180 and took 8 days for them to get ready thats before the time its taking for the snail mail to get there.

I wouldn't mind paying a few $ extra and waiting a couple of extra days,
$30 extra and 12 days so far and I still haven't got TGE :-(

Credit card might be the way the entire US is paying nowadays, but I've recently had a CFO refusing to buy a simple license from a reputable company with the company credit card because he was sure the system wasn't safe enough and his credit card would be cracked and sucked dry. He should know there aren't any systems that can't be cracked, and take a class in risk management if you ask me. The fact remains though that many people in Europe don't trust these VISA or Mastercard transactions like many Americans do.

However, it should become easier in the near future. Europe will get what is called SEPA : a Single European Payment Area. So when you needed a bank account in every country you wanted to do business with until now, you will be able to open up just one account and use it for the entire European Community. Perhaps GG is willing to take that into account to facilitate the transactions in Europe. The system is coming, but the ultimate form is still undecided, so we'll have to wait for the fine details.

The problem many people have with PayPal is that they take another percentage ABOVE the percentace creamed off by the credit card companies. So you would get 90% of your price. Those 10% could mean the competitive benefit in some cases.

Cheers

I think that www.moneybookers.com is a god option and the fees is very low:

www.moneybookers.com/app/help.pl?s=fees

I use it for 2 years in some websites.

@David Janssens, You can't really 'Suck' Your credit card dry. It is a bottomless pit of money, but you have to pay it back. But I do know what you mean, I am just bored and felt like saying that :)

Ideally in a few years the US banks will accept International Bank Account Numbers which will allow European and some African and Middle Eastern customers to pay directly from their bank accounts.

But, what about customers in Asia? They still need to send a bank draft.

Like it or not, US $ drafts are the universal way to send money worldwide... it's just not very fast.

The only way to send money quickly around the world is a credit card or an international wire.

And for those who fear they'll accumulate debt because of credit cards... people put themselves into debt, credits cards can't do it alone.

think that should read 'to the US', as I don't think sending a US $ draft to london from Asia would be of any use.. ;) but thats just me being silly

and your not kidding not very fast
18 days and counting... I'm sure never sending another bank draft, I want to mess about with Torque now not next year *sigh*

Plus as stated, not everyone has access to credit cards and some don't want access to them.

I don't have much to do apart from grumble here till my draft finaly gets to garage games, so you will have to excuse me :)

23 days since I sent the draft and still no sign of my Torque, thats only 27 days so far since I orderd it..

There is no way in hell, however much I want a product I'll go threw this again..

Looks like Its only TGE for me, I'll not be upgrading to TGA if theres no other way for me to pay,

Oh and thats IF it hasn't been conveniently lost in the post...
Then that would be me royally stuffed as Bank Drafts are not stoppable or refundable.

You can't cancel a bank draft. Ouch. Which country are you sending it from? In Canada it's about $7.50 to make a draft and $10 to cancel it.

And yes, I meant to say that US$ drafts are the universal way to send money to the US. US banks can keep a foreign draft for 30 days. From Canada I've experienced drafts taking anywhere from 15 to 30 days.

Its a UK Foreign currency bank draft, cost 12 GBP thats about 24 USD
am not sure about the cancelation to be honest, I am just going off what was said on :-

3. If the draft is stolen you cannot stop the draft. The only way to stop a draft is to produce it to the issuing bank.

I haven't looked into it fully yet as I'm hoping it will still turn up, however I haven't heard anything from GarageGames at all so I'm a bit worried It hasn't turned up..

Its still a couple of days off 30 days so theres still hope, I think.

Oh and Codemasters now except payPal as a payment option for Lotro as well as all the usual credit/debit cards

How does the credit card fraud detection bit work? Unfortunately, I've gone from Alaska to Japan, and back again twice now for extended periods. In that time I have made a purchase or two to GG while I was in Alaska, but can't make a purchase now that I am back in Japan with the same CC. The times in which I can call the telephone number it lists are hard to pull off as well due to time zones. I guess I am stuck going the money order route? (Or ring a friend back in Alaska and have them plug the info in?)

@Brian
I've preauthorized you, so you should be able to purchase the engine with your card.
