Really bad performance after upgrade to 1.7

Hey all,
I've not really been using torque for a while since I've been working on mobile content, but I have been checking out the various versions of TSA/TGEA every few months. Until now it has worked fine, but today I downloaded the 1.7 install pack and suddenly it all seems to have gone wrong...
From a clean install (with graphics & DX freshly downloaded today to make sure) all I'm trying to do is run the Examples. They all seem to have the same issue, the frontend works fine but once a mission begins to load I'm getting graphical freezes. For the most part the playGUI will not update. I cannot move or rotate the camera, water does not animate etc. It basically looks like the game has crashed... except that I can bring up the console, or open the GUI editor or mission editor. Occasionally the camera will change orientation, so it will suddenly face a different direction, but it's not a regular update (usually after the game window loses and regains focus). And just a minute ago, after I left it idle in the background (whilst typing this post) it seemed to recover and started responding normally, but this only lasted for about 5 seconds before returning to a freeze frame.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before, or has any theories on what might be causing it.
