Too bad the patch is 80MB. It sure got rid of "those lamer dial up users." And I'm not going to pay ten more dollars for a game that has too much lag to begin with. I think I'll return it for something... but what?

"Too much lag to begin with"??? What are you talking about? It still has one of the best network engines on the market...

For those with broadband, yes. If you start to get into the dial-up range, the pings you get while in the game are horrible. It actually has the worst net code (for non-broadband) that I've ever played with. Pings range from 400 at min (interiors) to nearly 4,000 at times (exteriors), not counting the spikes (they go up to about 40,000.) Of course, a large amount of people these days have broadband, so there really aren't many complaints, aside from the whining about how a ping of 300 is horrible. T2's the only game I've had this problem with. If you can find a dial-up user still playing in a server with about 15+ people, I'm sure he'll attest to it as well. I'm not sure how exactly it's coded, but the flux in between the amount of data you can handle is tremendous when it hits the 45k (min) wall.

umm ..
Quake 2 with large player base (over 10)
was really lagged on dialup..
what engine is good for dial up and mass multi player?
even rts's for the most part suck up the lag...

Um... I play T2 on dailup without problem... I guess I'm just weird. I'll agree HL has better net code, but that is about it, even UT has more lag than T2...

Anyways, I love the patch. It is a real great game now. my only issue is ... I just bought UT2K3... hmmm which will I play more of?

who still uses dialup?????

Me!

Reasons for using dialup :

1) If you can't afford cable/dsl/isdn/etc
2) If you live in a remote area with no cable or adsl enabled exchange
3) You aren't rich enough to afford using some sort of high tech satellite connection
4) You love dialing up

I'd love to have a broadband connection, but the simple fact is, that i do not have any affordable or available solution available to me. I guess that applies to other people in my area too.

I still use dial-up only because Broadband around here is $90+ monthly. Anyways, when I play Tribes2, with my Dial-up I ping around 200-220 Average which isnt too too bad for a Narrowband connection I suppose...

I still use dialup .. reason: cant get anything else in idaho lol.

I DO have satilite but we all know how well that works with any games :/

The Torque Engine's netcode is only as good as the scripter/programmer using it.

In Tribes 2's situation, I only got (referring to a time when I was a 56ker) high pings in certain mods, or on certain servers.

GOSH I LOVE THAT GAME!!! AND yes my game improved since I went to DSL...I played 6 months on Dial-up, you have to get real good at leading your guns and anticipating your opponents moves...When I went to broadband I was a GOD! in the game! Got ask to join 20 different Tribes in a few months period...so bandwidth does matter BUT I hate BroadBand Bigits...

i live in a remote area of dorset (UK) and broadband is just not an option so it looks like i'm gonna have to pay for this patch

I have never had problems with ping. Even before the patch. Now it's as smooth as butter. You guys have to remember that if you are on dial up in particular; you need to find a server that you can get a good ping and is consistent. The only problem with the HL net code is that it's easy to have those gay cheats. IMO Tribes and T2 net code has made me jaded because I have had such luck with it. I must say that a multiplayer online game can have everything but without good net code it is just another piece of garbage.

I play Anarchy Online on a 28.8 modem. I bought Tribes2 last August (2002) because I wanted to see what I can do with Torque first hand.

Around September, I stumbled on the T2 Houston Machines server and it became my favorite server. Lag was acceptable although everybody else own's my ass whenever I go head to head with someone. So I basically became the repair guy (because it allows me to score without nuking anyone) and bomber pilot. I have actually progressed to a point that I'm comfortable with that lag that I can actually kill 3 players in 30 mins (pathetic isn't it?).

Then the patch came.

I can still play on some uncrowded server. But Houston Machines normally has an average of 50 players whenever I log-in. Don't get me wrong, I love the patch. It fixed a lot of problems for me ... it's just when playing on a crowded server on a 28.8 connection ... being unable to move and being killed immediately upon respawn is no fun. :((

Just my 2c.

Alex

Alex, I recommend playing BF 1942 with even a 56k modem on a server with only 3 people and then judge the T2 network code or the patch again... ;)
It is still one of the best network codes around!

Ive been playing tribes 2 on dialup since its UK release and the problem Eli described Ie. 400ping indoors 4000 oudoors is simply fixed :)put your network settings on 28.8k modem in the T2 menu. And you should start pingin 200-300 all the time (depending on your personal circumstances of course). This started happening after 1 of the earlier patches and at the time was pretty much common knowledge. If you play on a 56k put your network settings to 28.8k in T2 :-D. Of course if this doesnt fix it feel free to call me a fool.

Actually, I lowered those controls to even further below the "28.8k" mark. If I put them higher to 28.8k or 56k, then my ping goes up about 2.000 to 20,000. I also lowered all of my graphics settings to the bare minimum, so that everything shows up as blocks or blobs. It runs better, but it's still unplayable. After a few days of downloading, I tried the patch. After a few games and no change in the playability, I've cast T2 aside... I don't plan on playing it again.

Meanwhile I play T2's granddaddy, Starsiege, which will hopefully be getting a 1.005 patch soon. :D On that game I get pings of 400 all the time with no lag at all. I have to say that SS is the easiest game I've ever played on with my connection.

Whereas on T2 I have to repair things indoors for a living, which gets old. You don't screw with my spider clamp turrets though! I'll hunt you down like a dog... if you're inside.

I don't know what it is about T2, but it's the only game that I've played that lag is that bad on. However, when I first got it a few months ago, in the first two weeks I could play with no lag at all, and frequently made bombing runs and started to like the role of gunner. I even had one guy say I was the best tank gunner he'd ever had. That all changed a few days later though, as suddenly I discovered that I couldn't move anymore.

Weird.

Glad i could help Alex :). Sorry it didnt fix it Eli, what you describe are the Exact same symptoms, I and a lot of Dial up users I know get with our settings on 56k, its strange that the problems would be so similar yet the fix doesnt work. For me T2 has to be the best game ive played from a 56k point of view, its the only game I know where a 56k'er stands a good chance against a broadband player of equal skill, of course it might have a lot to do with the fact most weapons have low rates of fire and rely on splash damage.
