I want a ....(fill in the blank)... Content Pack

by Florian · in General Discussion · 04/01/2008 (2:58 pm) · 15 replies

Hey guys,
Me and my friend have a week at school, and we need to get to work in that week. Me and my friend decided we would make a contact pack in that week. But with all the content packs already out there, we were wondering what other developers have forgotten. Because we don't want to make a pack that already has 5 versions out!

So why not ask the community?

What kind of content pack would you like to have? Can be script based, Art based, a combination, doesn't matter.
Just tell us anything that comes to mind that you desperately want but all the developers all have forgotten!

This pack will of course be Torque Compatible ;).

Thank you,

Florian

EDIT: Ps.. forgot to mention that the packs should be TGE or TGEA, we don't have TGB nor do we have experience with it, sorry for you TGB users.

Hey Houssen.
No, the contact pack will not be free, as that would counter the goal of the week. Sorry.
Also when you post a suggestion, make it a little more extensive, like I would like a medieval character pack. Or a futuristic. Etc.

I think a good pack to make would be a character to use for FPS/Third PS, that contain all necessary animations.

Animations such crouch, crouch walk, crawl, climb (ladder), swim, roll forward, roll left, lean left/right, shoot above head(over obstacle) hit recoil, sit, and of course the basic FPS animations such as run, jump, strafe etc. I think a lot of content packs look past these animations, though they are really necessary for some FPS, and probably all third person shooters. There was an animation pack released, however all of the animations were done for a character without a weapon. A shame.

Anyway, a decent model with good textures, a gun, the mentioned animations, and maybe a muzzleflash would be a welcomed addition.

Florian anything with a Mad Max feeling could be welcome in Darkwind: War On Wheels. :-)
I think something *really* based on the post apocalyptic theme is currently missing.
We already have a set of characters, so I don't think we would be interested in.

Good vehicles with low poly are considered.

Something I would love to see here and and here

Anyway, Mad Max's Interceptor is welcome too! 8D

I think a more robust foliage (trees, bushes, tree stumps, plants) pack would be awesome.

@J.P. Berry
Ok, a character pack is a classic one. So you're saying that the animations like that are important because a lot of packs don't have them? This is good to note ;). Because we don't want to make "Another of those" Packs.

@Stephan B.
So Post Apoc eh..
Now you say it, haven't seen any of those lingering around the GG community.
About the vehicle, ah, that's a familiar one, I followed that competition on the Game-Artist forums ;).

@Steve D
Hmm.. ok, and what would be different with for example the BT tree pack?
Just more content?

@Stephen H.
Oh, Forgot to mention that it should be a TGE or TGEA pack, sorry, I haven't got any experience with TGB, and so does my friend, I'll add that to my first post.

About animations:
in fact a good pack of useful animations, based on standard TGE/TGEA bones and joints rules would have some success.

... but after the previously mentionned post-apo pack. ;-)

That's correct, I believe that pack only has 5 or so trees, which is good for prototyping, but some better variety would be nice. My opinion is if you have a pack of characters or cars, that's very specific and chances are will not fit into a final game but plants and trees are the same no matter what.

How about a starship pack. I had it in mind to work on this myself, but I figure it'll be a few semesters before I get up to snuff enough on the math needed to make a go of it.

Basically, a rigid-body object with a center of gravity node, and a list of 'thruster' nodes that can each have a thrust force applied to them.

I kind of had it in mind to handle the thrusters as a pair of lists, where the first list was a reference to a node in the model, which provided the thrust vector:
thrusterNodeList = 'node1 node2 node3 node4 node5 node6 node7 node8 node9 ...'
And the second list was the force each thruster provided.
thrusterForceList = '1.9 1.9 3.8 40 20 2 2 2.8 2.8 ...'

Another set of lists would be used to control which thrusters were activated for which control maneuver (roll left/right, pitch left/right, yaw left/right, thrust forward, thrust backward, etc...)

@Stephan
yeah, maybe a pack like, FPS animation pack or RPG animation pack, etc
good idea

@Steve D
That's a good point of view I think. Making something that's universal.

@Theo Brinkman
Yeah, one thing I noticed myself too was that there aren't many flying combat vehicle packs.
A spaceship or a helicopter pack based on the same principle perhaps. Or an F16 pack.
Good idea!

A starship pack would be handy, but the coding part would be difficult. I believe you'd have to make engine changes, and dealing with vehicle handling can be a pain. For example, the way the flying vehicle is currently setup, the center of mass really doesn't affect how the ship will roll. I messed around with controls a bit, see this thread, but could never get the ship to have a proper roll.

But, all the more reason for someone to get in there and create a good control scheme. I never really liked Torques arcade-like flight model.

@ Theo- Changes like adding multiple thrusters with variable forces really shouldn't be all that difficult. There are already thruster nodes implemented, so some of the work is already done for you, you just have to expand upon it. Probably a good learning experience as well.

@J.P. Berry
We would have to research that. But I think it's worth a shot!

@Everyone

How would everybody feel about a melee combat pack. There hasn't been any content packs dealing with melee combat for torque. Only a few swords packs perhaps, but no coding parts.
How does a pack with coding and with a few weapons(sword, axe, mace) and animations sound?
Would it be something you would like to buy?

Just making a suggestion here ;)

A pack that has a bundle of monsters, such as:

Dragons
Orcs
Goblins
Werewolves
etc.

I would love to see a space ship/sci fi pack. a coupleof sci fi packs in this idea:

1) Futuristic weapons
2) combat space ship
3) civilian space liners and freight haulers
4) space stations

there is a couple that i can think of. I would do a couple of those myself, but time right now just does not permit it. So i would pay for good content packs in these areas.
