Overlord Management Software

by Jeramy79 · in General Discussion · 03/25/2008 (12:58 am) · 16 replies

My opinion of GG keeps going down and down. I purchased the Overlord Management system a few days ago and come to find out that it's no longer supported. Why are you still selling unsupported products? I can't even register on their website forums because it won't send out the activation email, and they don't answer any of the support emails i've sent in.

In defence of GG,
They are a publisher. If someone sells their product thru GG, and later drops support, It's up to the original author to tell GG to pull the product off the shelf. Don't blame GG.

True but it should also be GG's responsibility to protect it's customers.

Make sure your hosting supports PHP and MySQL. Otherwise, it shouldn't be too difficult to set it up.

Here's what I did when I helped Shon a while back:
Quote:
I just installed it on my HostMonster account to test. Here's exactly what I did.

Open FileZilla to FTP the overlord files to my host. I chose my test site and created an Management directory where I put the files. I followed in the readme.txt instructions and navigated to www.[site].com/management. I clicked the install link. I created the .htaccess file as per the instructions (as my host is unix/apache based) on the installation page.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule (.*) index.php?uri=$1

Then I changed the site name to "[Site] Management".

I put in the full url:
http://www.[site].com/management

I put in the full path:
/home/gettokno/public_html/[site]/management/

I turned on Spiffy URL's because I had modified .htaccess.

The database as localhost was fine for my hosting setup. It would have been directed to the actual IP address of my previous host's MySQL server.

I put in my username and password and the name of the database (rpgwmanagement) and the prefix (rpgw_). Make sure you do not have any spaces or special characters (!'s were a problem along with spaces the first time I installed it).

I made sure to create the MySQL database with these same fields on my hostmonster account. I clicked next and it populated the database.

I put my name and e-mail and created the admin account and password. I deleted the install.php file as per the instructions and logged in to test it. It seems to be working fine.

So that was how I set it up just now.

EDIT: Replaced the site-specific stuff.

Is there a good alternative to it? I am switching from joomla 1 to 1.5.

I wouldn't go with Overlord, I bought it and regret it. It's not worth the cost and publishers do normally provide support for products, that's not unexpected.

@jydog
Don't know. I haven't really looked around or used Overlord much. I hated the organization (or lack thereof) in DotProject.

I did a search on Jooma project management extensions and came up with a couple:
http://extensions.joomla.org/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=1863&Itemid=35

Don't know how extensive they are, though.

EDIT:
pointed to jydog to make who I was talking to clearer.

Sorry to throw in a "combo breaker", but my team is happy with Overlord and will be expanding it with our own scripts.

There are alternatives that may be better supported/updated, but this beats the hell out of making gantt charts in MS Project =)

I disagree, i think Overlord is well worth the money. The only real drawback is the limited file size that can be uploaded, which I overcome through using ftp and linking to files. (More reliable uploads anyways...)

As for support, that's a shame that GG isn't supporting the product, especially since the developer is a GG employee from what I understand.

I had Overlord up within a few minutes of purchase and haven't had any trouble with it and I'm not really a web guy and defintaly not a php guy.

I finally feel like my project has direction and some element of control over where it's heading.

I haven't had a problem with it. I just haven't had a need for it since I'm more a tinkerer than anything. If I had a full team and was kicking it with actual team management, then I'm sure I'd use it more. Sadly, with my own project schedule (which consists of me thinking "I have about 20 minutes...would I rather play Rock Band or work on something...RAWK!"), using notepad and a to-do list is as effective.

@David - That pretty much sums up my style. If I'm just fiddlin' with something on my own, I just use notepad to keep track of a task list and tackle things when I can. If I have to manage more than 2 people on something new, I create a new project on Overlord and fill it out and visit it when I can to update it.

*joy-at-Rockband* Can't wait to get home and download the Boston Super Mega Pack today. I've had to limit myself to 1 set a day now, just to stay productive in everything else...at least until I make it big as a drummer.

Hey all,

I didn't have an answer for a better alternative but someone on the Newtek forum suggested this on an unlrelated thread...

http://www.collanos.com/

It's free (unbelieveably) but I haven't had time to test it out.

Jeramy - I just bought overlord a couple of weeks ago, got a mail, got support, and was able to get into the forum. I also just tested out the forums "forgot password" to see if it was able to send out mails, and it sent me one.

Are you sure your mail didn't go to the spam bin or something? Anyway, what are you having trouble with in Overlord? I got it going after a try or two.

Nope no spam blocker on my email account. I checked and I did put in the correct email adress. I've submitted 2 or 3 requests a few days ago about support, because some of the graphics aren't showing up in the Minions sections, and it's not saving my avatars. I didn't have a problem setting it up. And yes Overlord is developed by one of GG's employees. Also the calander function isn't there, it just says coming in the future, but the last time they posted anything on their site was almost a year ago.

I found Overloard to be a good purchase, but it didn't suit my needs. I switched to Webcollab and have been happy with it. It's easy to setup and easy to use.
Edit to add their lisence:
Licence
WebCollab is released under the General Public License (GPL). Essentially this means you may download, use, deploy, re-distribute, or even modify it as you wish, all free of charge.
