Which Engine?

by Brian Carter · in Torque Game Builder · 03/21/2008 (4:28 pm) · 3 replies

I trying to figure out which engine to use for my single player RPG. I know I want to use sprites, but I also want to work with a 2.5D Isometric perspective. I know Neo Binedell is working on an isometric builder for TGB, but I have no idea if/when that will be released. Should I stick with TGB or look at TorqueX? I'm familiar with C#, so that wouldnt really be an issue for me at this point.

Anybody have any suggestions / comments? I getting to the point where I've created my initial art assets and need to commit to an engine one way or the other.

I would try using TGB since you already have it, and maybe look into the adventure kit for TGB as well. Derek and Deborah and I are going to work on a Fallout-ish clone using TGB in 2.5d isometric as well, though it will be a long learning process. :)

Yeah thats kinda where my gut feeling is. My main question now really is do I wait on Neo to release a nxISOBuilder candidate and work on building key systems, like chat, quest tracking etc.. or just start placing my World Creator++ tiles down on a regular grid and fudge it as best I can.

Shame that 2.5D isnt built into the TGB outright. Its a popular perspective.

The popular opinion around these parts is to never wait on what someone else is working on - especially if there is no clear completion time frame, and to just dive in, ask a lot of questions, and see what you can come up with. That's what I would do methinks.
