How do you make a profit?

How does an Indie Development Company make a profit developing video games?
Do you seek out a publisher before you create the game?
Do you create a game and that seek out a publisher?
How much can you make from a game?
If three developers spend 12 months creating a game at 90k a year salary for the developers, can you make 270k on a game to at least break even?
Can someone point me in the right direction or website?

Contact the editors and ask them to review your game.
Make sure your game is worth charging at least $10-$20 for.
Make sure your game is in a category that people want and most of all its FUN.
If its FUN, it will sell.

I suggest getting your name/company name up on the boards of good reviews by releasing some great free games, and move onto larger, commercial projects. From there, more people might buy because your other free games rocked.

2) You can if you have a fully realized game, a prototype, etc. They will get much further than "I have teh sw33t id34z!!!LOL!!1" You can also condemn yourself to exclusivity and be killed by the technology window. I know a ton of developers who have worked for companies that worked for years on games and never could deliver because the parent publisher cut funding because of the tech window. It may not be as huge of a problem as in prior years because tech isn't as much of a upward rise as previously viewed (though it still depends on what tech you are implementing).
3) Zero $ to Millions of $. Most make marginally more than zero. Jay Barnson can give better info as he tracks it much more accurately that I do. His blog totally rawks.
4) Well, you have paid 270k on salary, which leaves absolutely nothing for licensing, pitching, or other duties. You can spend zero $ depending on your crew and have better results. You could spend 10 million and have worse.
