Allot Of Questions From A n00b.

by Dylan Jones · in General Discussion · 03/08/2008 (6:05 pm) · 8 replies

Hello Everyone,
My name is Dylan Jones, I am inroducing myself becuase this is one of my first posts and i have a few questions.
I'm in a group of 3 for a high schol project. All three of us know little/nothing of torque, let alone any code or anything else. -But we are willing to try as hard as we can (very motivated).
This is our dream... make a 5 person (or whatever) online co-op game(using torque) makng a fps or third person shooter of killing zombies(A.I) and then change into them. Using weapon pickups and what not, all that average shooter stuf. We would love to have animations in it, like a helicopter crashing...

Questions...

1. To hard?
2. How does someone get the fps.sarter pack to work? We have had so many promblems from mouse trails (not cpu prombem) to it not loading, any commen errors we missed, any advice?)
3. Would anyone recomend any good basic shooter FAQs or Tutorials? (I have read allot of guides and purchased "Torque for teens"(
Thank You for your time.

-Dylan Jones.

Hi Dylan,

Very cool to hear that you have a motivated team- that always helps.

1. Not too hard at all. Especially since there is a team.
2. The mouse trails problem sounds like a background isn't being found. Is at the main menu, or splash screen? Might be an incorrect path to an image in the scripts.
3. There are lots of good tutorials, walkthroughs, and resources here on GG. Check out the resources section, and you should find plenty of stuff to keep you guys busy.

Remember, search is your friend! If you run into a problem, chances are the solution has been found. It might take some clever search queries, but you should eventually get your answer if you look hard.

1) too hard is in the eye of the beholder. With no coding experience between the lot of you, it will depend on a) how willing you guys are to learn, and b) how far off the beaten path from the norm/whats available you want to go. I would have recommended checking out Dark Basic which might be easier for you to work with but Torque is a great product if you are willing to put in the hours.

2) I don't even know how to begin to answer this question... to many variables with two little information.

3) As Nathan stated, GG contains a very large amount of info and goodies if you spend the time to look. There are probably dozens of resources you could plug in to your game to do most of what you may want. The forums are an excellent tool though you may need to be creative in how you look things up.

Good Luck guys.

The very first place to start, is the console.log found where your torqueDemo.exe is found. (it's a text file that can be opened in textEdit or notepad)
Look thru it for any and all errors.
Once you have found the errors, you can fix them. Look thru the scripts. Search the mods here to see if there is some already written code to help you on your way.
All the rest has been answered.

You may beable to but most people are not able to create a big game liker yours as you just started making games. I am 13 and when I first got Blender (blender.org), I couldn't create squat. So then I just learn how to make a square from some basic tutorials. and then, finally greater and greater stuff. But I am still not expert yet, but my point is, you probably can't be expert right off. Make a simple game to get your team used to game making. Like say 1 character, 1 weapon, 1 level, and you gotta kill 1 guy.

Good luck. Shane

P.S. Can I join? I am mostly for making the actual objects. Don't know how much time I can stay in, or how much time I will have to work. E-mail me if I'm allowed.

Off topic, but @Madd - 13 and getting into Blender?! Awesome man- keep that up and become pro. You'll have plenty of work later in life! I started along the same path, and got into modeling at around 17, but stopped for a long time doing web and graphic design (2D)... Came back to modeling, and it was like starting all over.

Wow, first of thanks for all your answers, they helped allot.

@ Nathan] Yes, i really dont know much, however i will print your response and show it to the team, were not sure what a splash screen is or/and we dont know the path or the scrips. Haha, we dont know much. However i think i will be able to show my teacher, he might understand. And yes, i am now realizing that garage games has many good tutorials, some are a little value and dot cover what we ned, but i will keep on shifting through them. And i tried using the search, but it rarely came up with anything related, however i will try to put in better keywords, i guess if it works for you, it will work for me. I will look into that -thank you.

@ Andrew] Yes? We are very willing to learn, very motivated, i dont know how far off the path we wil go, only because i dont know the path we will take, but nothing out of the norm (as in, guns, zombies, online, LAN, co-p, terrain, lighting, transforming into a zombie no animation just being a zombie) and much more..i guess...) Dark basic eh well, i think we have to stick with torque for now, we finally got it working. And about the starter pack, i dont know much about that either, i was just looking for a cent of knowledge because i looked for 18 hours (no exaggeration) with my teacher for this starter pack on the disk, to find later that ere was some patch "errata" thing for the book, with this it worked, but now i guess has no background as stated above. And i will certainly look around the forums more too.

@ Mike] Thank you for tha exra info, im going to show this to my teacher and we can try to trouble shoot it on monday, i wil report back with any promblems we have, thanks for that info, really.

@ madd] Dude, i will definitely talk to you, we love help and have no idea what were doing so if you want to jump off the deep end with us, with no floatys, we would love it. ill send you some details!

-Again everyone thank you so much for posting and i will post back here on our status later.

Thans Again.

Dylan, awesome attitude and energy, if I had had that kind of hopefulness and drive at your age I would be where I want to be now and not just on the path!!!

I hope you and your buddies are still working on this project and that Madd has been able to play along and join in!

Welcome to game development Dylan.

Are you using the version of Torque that came with the Torque for Teens book patched with the starter.fps, or are you using the latest demo version. If you are still using the TfT version, may I suggest visiting the Torque Game Engine page and downloading the demo? It is the latest version of Torque (1.5.2) and does include the starter.fps :p

I'd like to offer some suggestins on programs, resources and articles that I think will help greatly with your project:
Constructor. Great (free) program made for designing Interiors for Torque. If you've ever used a 3d modeling program before it's quite easy to get the hang of (I managed to make my first decent building in a few hours, and I am awful at 3d art) and yet is still very powerful for someone who learns all the tools. It's really quite impossible to have a game without buildings and structures, so Constructor is a must.

Shotguns, what other gun could you possibly shoot a zombie with?

Dunno how much you guys know about 3d math, but if you find yourself lacking, This page was great for me. Even though most of those problems are already functions in Torque, it's good to know what they do or how to use them (like getting the dot product between a facing AI Player and a player to see if they are facing them.)

Triggers will be necessary if you want your cool scenese/animations (like that crashing helicopter) to happen when a player crosses a certain point, or stays somewhere to long, etc...

G'luck and feel free to ask any questions on the forums, I know alot of us are willing to help.
