Sprite-Sheets 12 fps?

I have another question...is there a rule on sprite animation on TGB as to what is the optimum frame rate (frames per second - fps)!?
I am presently using 12 fps so a 36 frames will give me about 3 seconds. For movies, I believe it is 24 fps.

I do frame by frame animation drawn in a vector illustration program. In my experience, you just do whatever looks good with the animation. Certain animations should look faster, some slower, some have more frames, some have less. It all depends.

Good news is you can have different framerates for individual animations (even for the same sprite), so you can tweak endlessly until it looks right to you.

Honestly, the fps depends on how much you are willing to draw and how much texture space you're willing to give up. You can make a really fluid 12 frame running animation running at 12 fps or a Mario-style running animation of 4 frames running at 4 fps. I'm doing 8fps for my guy's walking animation, and it's smooth (but cartoony).Good news is you can have different framerates for individual animations (even for the same sprite), so you can tweak endlessly until it looks right to you.

Thanks for the response - I'll try some lower 8 fps but any lower may affect the quality that I'm looking for. As Kevin said above "whatever looks good".Thanks again
