Game Design Wiki

by Ari Patrick · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 02/22/2008 (4:11 pm) · 5 replies

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been looking at various game design resources. Though I've seen a few that I like, most of the resources I came across only talked about the basics of game design as opposed to being actual resources for designing games. For this reason, I thought I'd post here to see who would be interested in a wiki that not only discussed the basics of game design, but also acted as a resource for those who are in the process of designing games.

For those interesting in a game design wiki, I'd like to hear some of the things you'd expect to find in a resource like this. Also, if you'd be interesting in helping me work on this project, let me know and I'll be sure to get in touch with you.

That is such a can of worms. It sounds like a good idea but it's far too general. It'd be better to create a "match-three game design wiki" because of the much smaller, focused scope. Someone working on an MMO would have very different requirements than someone working on a Sim.

What sort of game are you looking to design? We, the forum, could then offer suggestions and advice.

Actually I think is a very cool idea. Indeed, there is more focus around the basics, than on actual production resources, so would be a great wiki.

Some ideas around what to put there:
* Design Docs Templates (of different game types)
* Technical Docs Templates
* royalty free pics to use on the Docs
* Design Doc Postmortems, could be an intresting idea, with people talking about the DD itselfs -instead of the game-, and its results and experiences.

There you have a few ideas :)

Something like www.gamedev.net? or maybe www.gamasutra.com?

I'd second the GDD templates.

some other things I might include:

* How to Write GDDs
* Royalty Free Game Mechanic Designs (for basic mechanics)
* Mock-up How tos (How to mock things up in various game engines)
* Sample GDDs from released games. (might be hard to come by,..but they'd be useful to see)
* Reviews of GDD software (i.e. Word, Wiki, etc)

Has this wiki gone into development? I'd like to track it's progress.
