AVS Error - No way around it...

by Nathan Harris · in Site Feedback · 02/16/2008 (6:32 pm) · 10 replies

So, I finally decided to buy TGE to get started. Can't though, because I can't get internet access where I live (outside of dial-up), so I go into town to connect to the free wi-fi there. The wonderful security at checkout won't let me complete my purchase though, as the whole AVS thing picks up that I'm not at home. What a bunch of crap.

I almost sent a support request, but then decided to roll around the forums to see if anyone had similar problems, and a few had. It seems it would have been a waste of time to send that support request, as no one else ever got a response any sooner than a week, if at all. Wow, I'm really impressed! I can only imagine how pleased I would have been plopping down $150, only to find the same quality rearing it's ugly head at me.

Okay, that's the angry side of me talking, seeing as how I'm impatient and I've been looking forward to getting TGE, and now that I'm here, ready to buy... Slapped in the face. How typical. At any rate, what's the word on fixing this? I probably won't care by the time I come back to check this, but still...

This bums me out. It seems as though GG isn't putting their all into making everything related to their cash cow work and look as it should. Sure, this is probably a small problem that not too many encounter, but that's an excuse to overlook a problem in itself.

Actually, it's a security feature to keep people from stealing your credit card information and making purchases away from your local area. In other words, it's intended, not "a problem" as you seem to think.

Most people just send off the email and are merrily on their way after they are pre-authorized. It being a weekend, it would most probably happen for you on Monday.

I broke down today and got a wireless broadband service, so I have internet at home... so I bought TGE, and no AVS errors at checkout (of course), so I'm all good now.

I understand now the reasoning for the security, I thought it was a bad quality band-aid for a problem having to do with fraud overseas or some such... To be honest, I jumped the gun. It's been one of those weeks, where everything seems to go bad at the last darned minute- the previous problem with buying Torque being one of them. No excuse I know, but I can't help but laugh at how true it is. Heh, today for example- got that wireless broadband card today, got home... Well let's just say I got to know one of the tech guys for a few minutes. Turned out to be corrupted drivers on install in case anyone is curious.

Well I'm off to dig into this puppy. Thanks for the reply Stephen, and sorry for getting hasty there.

And also, I just thought I would state that I did not see a support request come across from you, which is odd since I've been taking care of a ton of them between games and engine versions.

Ah, that's because I never sent one... I wasn't in a position to go through the e-mail tag game at the time (not even a bounce or two), and by the time I'd gotten home and gotten my internet setup- well no need for support at that point.

Since I grabbed TGE, I've stayed up all night getting an overall feel for things. I'm a little bummed about a few things not being to par out-of-the-box, but between the forums and plethora of other resources I'm sure I'll overcome those little (mostly) things. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of max texture sizes for various things, terrain lightmaps for example. I wish you could easily up this to say, 2048x2048 without any hassle.

I hope there aren't more little nuances like this, and they aren't still floating in the engine as a sort of "limitation" or rather a way to make TGEA or other packages more enticing. But again- the more I dig around the more obvious it becomes that these things can be changed with a bit of work.

I know I must be coming off as a whining fool, seeing as how my first couple posts are going to appear... Well, are, complaints. That's just me- it's actually just random thoughts that at any given moment seem important to me, but in a day or so I'll read this and go "What was I thinking?". So please, don't take anything personal guys!

I'm liking TGE, and am anxiously awaiting to surprise my team with news of our new purchase. Sadly, I'm a mediocre programmer, more of a designer than anything. So I won't be showing off anything grandiose anytime soon, but I know enough to get around, and follow more "advanced" topics through. The rest of the team is well placed in their skill sets- we have a concept artist with many years of experience in other fields of real world art, a musician/sound technician whose skills far surpass that of many pros I've seen... Though he's against using his magic for money. We have a few other prospective team members that would fit right in, so if all goes well (knock on wood) we may at least be showing something soon.

I know I got off topic there- but I did want to make a point. I am excited to work with TGE, and even though I'll complain like a little brat at times... Well, I'm a satisfied customer when it comes down to the brass tax. Not much else to say.

Er, actually there is one other thing- I'm going to check my bank account here in a sec, but when I checked earlier last night, there were a bunch of $1 fees from GarageGames, I assume from my frantic attempts at purchasing TGE the first time. Will that be credited back? I think it was like $12 or something total. Just curious, not worried or anything.

I read your "almost sent a support request" as "sent a support" request. My mistake.

The $1 are to ensure that the account works and exists (as well as a funding check). They should be credited back.

Hello all.

I have the same problem:
Address/Zipcode Verification Failed (AVS) Your purchase order was not
completed and your credit card has not been billed.

It seems the main issue is in the following fact - I'm not living in U.S., I'm living in Ukraine.
Of course, I have already sent e-mail to support and still waiting for any response..

P.S. As I can see Toqrue products are worldwide popular but you can easily buy only from U.S.

Not related but I just want to say that ever since David Blake had been replying customer support, you could get a reply within hours of your request for support (maybe less). So I'll say the customer support here is pretty reliable.

Still awaiting response,26 hours have elapsed since that time as I sent the first e-mail in the technical support(purchasing@garagegames.com).
But I still have a hope in my heart to get an answer:)

That's a security feature to avoid your card being used out of its registered area. You should be good to go! Let me know if you're having any more problems!

EDIT: Just thought that I also should note that I didn't get your request in either my inbox or my spam filters.
