How is latency approached when dev a game?

by Tsantsa · in Technical Issues · 02/15/2008 (4:47 pm) · 2 replies

I am writing a research paper for a class. I decided to do my paper on how developers approach latency issues with games where timing is a major factor. (FPS and fighing games come to mind, but there are many more)

The problem is, I can't FIND anything on the topic! I saw on bungie.net in their latest blog entry some mention on how they are going to mend a melee problem, and it's good info, but I need more than just one source. I don't want info on how to edit NIC settings or anything, I would like to know what methods the developer uses to help with latency. I realize that it can never be totally eliminated but it can be handled.

If anyone can provide some links for reading that aren't just bb forum posts, that would be great!

Also, I'd like to stay console specific because they are less configurable than a pc is, but ANY is appreciated.

Thanks.

Check out the white papers written by Mark Frohnmayer and Tim Gift ot OpenTNL, as well as some of the write up on TorqueNetworking.

I also caught a blog a year or so ago by Jason Booth regarding AI and latency, which you can read here. Great stuff, that.
