Problem with 1.7.2 on Win XP

by RollerJesus · in Torque Game Builder · 02/13/2008 (8:36 pm) · 5 replies

I can't really nail down a specific bug per say, so I thought I'd throw this one out here. I'm using the indie license of TGB 1.7.2 on a Windows XP machine (Core 2 w/ 2 Gb RAM, plenty o' HD space).

I'm periodically getting a lot of flickering on the editor and extremely slow performance when adding/editing anything. It seems to run fine, then will suddenly hang up, but not crash.

I've updated my video card drivers and anything else I could find. TGE runs just fine as does all my other software. (Lightwave 3d, XNA, etc)

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Patrick,

Recently a similar problem has developed for me too. Sometimes when I run my project, it gets really choppy for 3 seconds or something like that; kind of like a hang up like you described. I had no problems like this until I started using behaviors in my game. Perhaps that is causing some issues?

Kevin,

I'm leaning towards a heat issue on my laptop because it seems to run fine for the first hour or so of working on it, then even the simplest change (selecting a sprite) will cause the problems. I ordered a cooling tray and will try it again next week.

I've also burned up a video card in the past, so I know heat is an issue.

As for the behaviors idea, are you using custom made, or some that you got off the GG site, is so which ones?

Ah, ok. That would indeed make sense considering the circumstances before your problem occurs.

I'm using custom behaviors. When I had the problem, I was using 2 and I'm up to 4 now, and haven't experienced the issue in a long time. Maybe its not going to be a problem? Hopefully!

Patrick, can you let me know what comes of this issue? I'd definitely be interested to hear if it was just a heat issue, or something more. Good luck.

@Ken,
No problem. I'll let you know.

Well, it is most likely a heat issue. (waiting on a cooling tray) I have an Alienware Area-51 laptop. The video card in particular has the heating problem - Nvidia GeForce Go 7600. Second heat related video card problem this year. If anyone is considering buying one, I'd recommend trying to find someone else with one and seeing if they have problems too. Seems to be quite a few unhappy users.

Sorry bout the rant.
