Damage indication

Hi guys
I'm looking into having a damage indication on a 3D model, such as a piece of armour that has about 3 stages of deformation. Its normal state, then slightly damaged after taking a hit, then very damaged after taking another hit for example.
I think this can be done with textures, am i right. The model will be going into torque so i'm trying to find out how much needs to be done in 3D (maya) and what can be done in torque also.
Anyone have any ideas how a texture, or the object itself, can change for each damage hit. it doesnt need to deform in realtime, just switch between each damage level when hit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
AP
