Eee PC for TGE - Hee Hee

Has anyone tried running TGE on this little bad boy? It looks to be a great mini-mobile-dev platform...

Eee PC

Having a hard time getting excited about a 7" screen.

It also doesn't say anything about the CPU type or speed, only that
it's an "Intel Mobile". Nor is there any information about the GPU.

It's cute, but unless you have perfect 20/20 vision and have a real
burning desire to play 3 hours of solitare, I don't see much use for it.

It comes with Linux, there is no hard drive, you use usb devices and sd cards - so you could boot off a card - windows or linux compatible. Runs OpenGL - it had a pretty cool 3d quake game on it. A guy had one at work - imagine writing Torque games on the bus, without the bulk of a laptop - V.Cool!

I guess I'll do the deed and see if he's willing to run starter.fps in linux for me.

From what I've seen it's perfect - it's just it need to be benchmarked for 3d apps before I get one. I think it's also designed for kids as there's an XL version that's indestructible.

There is a Windows version coming out. Better to get one of the Acer with nvidia & hdd can be had for only $100-200 more than an Eee. I think it's a cool product though.

Based on previous sales Asus expects 3-6 million to be sold this year.

Review:
arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/eee-pc-review.ars

Specs:
* CPU: 900 Mhz Intel Mobile Celeron
* Video: Intel GMA 900
* Display: 7" LCD widescreen at 800x480
* Storage: 4GB internal flash
* OS: Custom Xandros-based Linux
* RAM: 512MB
* Optical drive: None
* Networking: Atheros AR5007EG wireless, 10/100 ethernet

With those specs I would stick to the Linux distro ;p

Uggh.. With those specs Starter FPS is going to get about 4 frames per second at best.

Reviewers found it to be just as responsive under Linux as Windows XP/Live is on many modern laptops. I think this is very possible, since I run Debian Linux well on a 650Mhz Dell Laptop with 256MB Ram that would not run XP or Live at all.

In the big picture though, if Asus really sells 3-6 million of these things in the US as they are projecting, then maybe there is a market for these book sized laptops. If that is the case we could see an emerging market here for indie devs to keep an eye on. I noticed that there are already a few games that come with the Eee PC, and that the very well made Frozen Bobble runs fine on it as well.

We bought one at my day job here. Cute, but with the super small (4/8GB) hard drives, room gets taken up very fast just with default stuff- nevermind if you start adding apps to it. The upside is that it's not too shoddy speed-wise, with Linux installed (I wouldn't want to try XP on it), but the screen is small, it's not as easy to just install stuff and get it to run, and despite the SSD inside it, it feels like a flimsy toy (but that's just aesthetic, I admit). I have high hopes for the next generations of it, and they have plenty of room for going to a 8 or 9 inch screen in their current form factor.

As far as links to the Acer's. Try newegg they carry the full line.
