Editable Poly question in relation to exporting

I'm curious. I'm now aware, thanks to looking around, that you will get an error if you attempt to export a rigged editable poly through the exporter, but I would like to know why editable poly causes such a problem, and if a tremendous fix would be required to allow it. I'm no coder, but I have access to a couple. Modeling in editable poly and collapsing to editable mesh before rigging is all well and good, but editable poly is much more versatile. It's a minor inconvenience I guess. I'll admit being a bit nervous going back to editable mesh after so many years with editable poly, but I figured I'd ask just for the heck of it.
