TGEA Development

I am still a bit perplexed why GG has not setup a subversion or cvs server so that all the bugs can be slowly massaged out of this product...

At any rate I have assembled my current changes to the TGEA 1.0.3 engine in diff format you can download the diff and patch gnu tools yourself! I have included my batch files I use for diff'ing and patching from the command line.

These changes have been built and tested and address the following issues:

- LOD and Material issues www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=67273
(Minor changes to Mr. Fairfax's code get it to build in 1.0.3)

- TGEA MS4.2 Bug : Fogging of scaled static shapes not working www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=57923

- Player shadows with and without terrain?? www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=71014

- Speedometer Bug www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=70782
(Including the DIF version test changes so older interiors now load in TGEA)

www.2shared.com/file/2727830/635b7714/tgea_diff.html

I would appreciate any additional bug fixes I may be missing in this cryptic soup of message boards.

Also there is an animation bug in TGEA the crossbow string does not rotate properly in TGEA and thus far I cannot see where the issue lies the math appears appropriate (rotationally speaking :))

There used to be a CVS server but learning to use CVS was infinitely too difficult for new developers. GG has a private subversion server running internally, but it is not open to the public.

Well I know personally I would love access to a more cohesive revision strategy than reading through forums and trying to decipher a bad hack from and elegant solution! Have you guys ever thought of opening the subversion up with the tortoise windows plug-in its fairly idiot proof.

I don't know if it has been tossed around or not, but TortoiseSVN is great! I know that a large number of discussions are going on about the transparent development framework for Torque 2, and I am hoping that some of the bang for that buck gets pushed into TGE/A/B as well. But since that's still a ways off, I'm not sure what stop-gap solutions are available.

Dropping TGEA and go back to TGE until TGEA is really TGE Advanced and not TGE broken + shader

(thats what we do for the moment. I spend over 4 weeks reading the boards, looking for potential fixes etc for numberous errors and glitches for stuff that I assumed would have been ironed out by the release day already ... over 90 small fixes of stupid copy paste errors included)

Well personally TGEA has issues, but I think the big problem is that TGE is soooo damn mature anything but perfection will be considered a dog. I personally would appreciate it if GG does me a favor and gives all TGEA owners the following:

1. A revision system with some type of voting for patch submissions (Since GG seems to be spread thin).

2. Access to the latest TGE a developmental license for FREE. It would be nice to be able to see where TGEA and TGE diverge and then migrate bits and pieces in and out. I see a ton of OpenGL code commented out in TGEA and it would nice to be able to review and learn from debugging TGE and the easiest way to do that is with a debugger and source code.

Well all new owners get TGEA + TGE for the price that "straight after release" buyers payed for TGEA ...

I just bought the TGEA a few weeks ago... And I dont have access via my account to TGE!?!?!?!

Then you didn't use the option to buy it as TGE user and buy TGE upfront for 150 ... 150 + 145 = 295$

Hmm.... Paid $295 for it... Thinkin' I should be talking to someone.....

I made myself a T-shirt:

"Hacking the hacks they hacked with hacks.
This is my everyday with TGEA."

No one in my town understands the sarcasm in it. :/

That's a great shirt! If I send you $10 bucks can I get one in XXL?
BTW! GG did right by me and gave me a TGE 1.5 license!

GG isn't an evil corporation even though sometimes we may consider the possibility ;) . The biggest issue to me is not being one of the ones "in the know" for lack of a better term right now. Yes... they have decent reasons for keeping things quiet I'm sure, and yes, they probably are working night and day with their time being split on legions and T2 (not necessarily in that order). I have no issue with that if it's the case. I just wish I knew what their plans are for TGEA; some sort of roadmap like many of the other engines have. I'm sure some people would use it against them, but it would be nice knowing if TGEA is for all intensive purposes finished as it's going to get, or if there's still more to come.

I have been very disappointed with the development of TGEA. It would be nice for those of us who purchased it, to get some sort of discount on Torque 2.

I have been pretty hard on GarageGames in the past and I hope I haven't made them too mad at me. I really feel the direction they are headed in right now is going to benefit all of us. Legions is looking awesome and Torque 2 looks promising.

Shirt related / partially off topic(sorry):

Inkjet iron ons are nice for half-assed tshirts. I also made one of this:

...no one around my town gets that one either. :/

This always comes up. I don't think anyone considers them evil. You don't have to hate someone to disagree with them. I disagree with their direction on TGEA, but they probably do it for a reason, possibly because it financially makes sense to do so.

Whatever the reason, it's still unfortunate for me as a licensee. TGEA looked really slick when it was announced. Torque 2 looks slick at its announcement, too. But, to me, Torque 2 could wander the same path as TGEA did for all I know. And I'm not willing to place money on another beta that might never end.

Look I don't have an issue with it as long as they are transparent. Are any of you really going to seriously complain about at most a $295 investment which gets you a baseline working game engine? And if you ever get to the next level where you have a decent game going you only have to cough up another $1k? I don't need GG to give me the world. I would suggest they start a massive comment campaign in their code bases! PLEASE!

ALSO I REALLY REALLY WANT A FIX FOR THE CROSSBOW STRING ANIMATION BUG
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It bothers me to think that models wont always animate properly.

The file appears to be read in the same way it is in TGE I have diff'ed all relevant code. (ALTHOUGH I COULD NOT COME UP WITH A MORE OBSCURE IN PLACE OBJECT INSTANCING).

The rotation and translation flags on the sequences are identical.

I have stepped through the animation cycle frame by frame no differences.

I have dump the Translation Matrix during the render of the left string and the do not agree in TGE and TGEA how this is possible when the file and base class structure looks right is beyond me.

HELP!

Hey all,
Despite all of the rumors to the contrary, I have been working hard on a big update to TGEA!

You can check out the details over in my latest blog post.

I have been keeping track of the bug posts here on the forums (great work on that diff Chris =) and, while I can't guarantee that I will be able to address all of them, I will do my best to make sure they make it into this update. Please keep them coming!

I am still seeing the crossbow animation bug in the latest TGEA. If you don't beat me to it then I will be taking a look at that before it gets released.

Matt,

Glad to hear it! I am going cross-eyed looking for the mysterious crossbow animation bug....
If you have any thoughts on it I would love to hear them! Honestly the entire tsShape class could use a good reorganization but I have not been able to spot the issue. For some reason I think it has to do with the string objects being named differently right string200 -> right string but I haven't found a link... I will keep at it because I'm OC....
