Steampunk Spaceshpis?

by Donald "Yadot" Harris · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 01/11/2008 (9:00 am) · 6 replies

So I am working on fleshing my game design doc for a space shooter. I wanted to have some graphical twist so that it did not fall in with the crowed. And I thought STEAM PUNK would be good. The only thing however is I can't come up with a SCI-FI twist as to how steam engines power a spaceship. I am working on something right now but I was wondering if I made this work (ie sound plausible) Would Steam Punk spaceships work?

I know its all about having the right Art Director as well but that is another thread.

I know a guy who wrote a story about a spaceship which was a self-enclosed fantasy world.

Event Horizon? I hated that movie... if he wrote that kick him in the shins for me :)

Hi pressure steam instead of rocket fuel...?

Ether goes back to the E.R. Burroughs approach to Victorian space travel and something I've never found satisfying (more magic than Victorian science). I'm more inclined to think Jules Verne and his Submarine Nautilus as a starter, and devise a propulsion system using super headed water could work...

Very interesting idea of having "Ironclads in Space" though Donald.

@James
You hit the nail right on the head. I want to work in 2d only. I don't want to share to much of my idea as its still being fleshed out. I do want to have large lumbering Ironclads moving in space but also smoke bellowing fighters duking it out. All the interfaces will be steampunk as well.

If this first multiplayer game then I would like to take it to something bigger. I had hope to make the GG Feb contest but after a developer got a hold of my design doc he started using a lot of red ink and I have a lot more work to do. What I will have to do is hit GG up later when I have something really solid.

The only big issue I have facing me now is finding an Art director. I have a music guy and possible concept artist. To get the highly level attention I have been told my art direction needs to be top notch. So I need find someone who can do Steam Punk 2d and help with GUI design as well.
