Not seeing the Starter projects

by Rob Cowell · in Torque X 2D · 12/31/2007 (7:13 am) · 18 replies

I've installed Visual C# Express 2005 (although this machine has VS2008 on it), the SP1 update for it, then XNA Game Studio 2.0 and then finally TorqueX, but I'm still not seeing any of the TorqueX starter projects in VC#

Anyone any suggestions as to what I've missed here?

FYI, its the Free beta of TorqueX - could it be that the projects are only available in the "paid for" editions?

Torque X does not currently support XNA 2.0, you will have to stick with 1.0 refresh for now.

When you go to new project, is "XNA Game Studio" highlighted or "Visual C#" highlighted? It is under the Visual C# catagory.

I have a different problem though, whenever I open one i get an error stating that "The project type is not supported by this installation", and this is with the latest versions of Visual C# 2005 Express, SP1, XNA 2.0, and the latest torque x. anyone else have this issue?

XNA 2.0 wont work with Torque X you need to reinstall XNA Game Studio Express 1.0 Refresh.

On my system, the Torque X project templates are installed at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VCSExpress\ProjectTemplates

If you don't see files like GarageGames_StarterGame2D_Template_src.zip then they didn't get installed properly.

Also be sure you are starting C# express, not VS2005 or VS2008.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VCSExpress.exe"

And of course, as others have mentioned, you need XNA 1.0 installed.

Do you mean the play button in TXB or in C# express? Did the project build or were there compile errors. What error did you get? You need to provide more information if you expect help. "a error report pops up" isn't really helpful ...

I have the same problem, no starter projects in the new project dialog. I am definitely starting C# express and my "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\VCSExpress\ProjectTemplates" path has the following files:
1033\
XNA Game Studio 2.0\
GarageGames_StarterGame2D_Template_bin.zip
GarageGames_StarterGame3D_Template_bin.zip
Spacewar360.zip
SpacewarWin.zip
XnaWindowsGame-v1.zip
XnaWindowsGameLibrary-v1.zip
XnaXbox360Game-v1.zip
XnaXbox360GameLibrary-v1.zip

As you will note from the path I am on a 64 bit machine, vista to be specific, which may be the problem. I can run and compile XNA 1.0 projects and TorqueX samples if I load them but no starter projects show up. Matter of fact, the only Project types in new project are Spacewar Windows & 360, a Racing Game sample I installed, and Search Online Templates. No other tree branches on the left.

Tried running VC# Express as administrator too, no luck. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and even repairing, but no go.

I do have VS2005 & VS2008 all installed on this machine too, which probably isn't helping matters.

Looks like the templates are in the XNA Game Studio 2.0 folder. Torque X only works with XNA 1.0 at present. Do you have XNA 1.0 installed? You can have 2005 and express and 1.0 and 2.0 all instaled together without conflict. I'm using Vista but not 64-bit.

I have XNA 1.0 installed, I can compile and run both XNA 1.0 in Express and 2.0 in VS2005. All said and done I have C# Express, XNA 1.0, XNA 2.0, VS2005, VS2008, and the TorqueX 1.5 beta. Not much left to install.

Under "XNA Game Studio 2.0\" is just:
Spacewar360-v2.zip
SpacewarWin-v2.zip

I'm sorry scott it's when i'm in the torque x builder not visual c# express. The project builds and saves just fine but where/when i'm acually making the game theres a play button at the top to test the game to see what it's like so far. If you put your mouse on it it says Run a Pre-Built version of your game.

@Bob Joe

In TXB, make sure you have Saved Project (if you added any materials, etc) and Save Scene. Check if VC# pops up with a reload message and recompile. Then the play button in TXB should work. If not, what exactly is the error report saying?

The starter game has encountered a problem and needs to close we are sorry for the inconvience.

Sorry i wasn't detailed on the last post but thats what the error report says. there was no reload/recompile message thats why i'm telling you what the error report says.

@Bob Joe

Sorry, that's a generic windows error message that could be caused by many things. There's just not enough info to narrow the problem down. I don't have any additional ideas for you to check.
