Freespace 2 Source Project needs coders ;)

Yeah, I should probably put this in the help wanted section, but this is totally volunteer, and I always feel wierd about putting volunteer stuff into the help wanted.

As many of you may know, Volition and Interplay (mostly Volition) released the engine source for Freespace 2 several months back.

Since then, a couple of full scale development tracks have opened up, one specifically a Linux port by the rockstars at icculus.org, and the other a more feature enhancing upgrade, including an eventual DirectX upgrade, replacing the multiplayer server stuff with standards based code, hacking FMV players back in (MVE was yanked out because it was a proprietary Interplay codec) and generall adding things to the game engine to take advantage of newer systems.

We have released one exe update, we have a CVS infrastructure, a design plan, and an excellent (if small) group of talented coders as well as the backing of (one of the most religiously fanatic) the FS2 community for any additional art needs.

Basically, we could use another coder or 3 ;)

So, if you want to work on an older game engine, for no pay and no prestige other than a line on the resume, with some great people and some great fans, and you can handle having the occasional task assigned to you, please email me!

The more or less temporary site can be accessed at:

Our CVS is anon read to the public, and our forums are chock full of folks waiting to meet you :)

FS2 was an awesome, awesome game... Not my dream space sim, but pretty darn close.

If I had the time, I'd gladly help y'all. I encourage everyone out there who doesn't have the resources for a Torque game to go work on this project. It's a full, complete game engine (more complete than Torque, cuz nothing was diked out :P), and there are a LOT of ways it can be improved on with today's hardware.

And, of course, it looks great on your resume, especially if you want to get into game development.

Well, movie playing and game matching were actually taken out ;)

It was (and is) a great game with a great community. It's nice to be able to give somethign back and keep it alive :)
