Why use ifl over animated UVs?

What is the benefit of using ifl over animated uvs?
I was wondering if you made a tank and wanted to have a moving tread wouldn't an animated uv save texture memory? I could have one texture of a tread and move the uvs along the tread? Where as ifl i have to make a truck load of textures just moving the texture bitmap by a pixel.
