How are you suppost to learn?

Ok so im going through TDN reading the small amount of info that is there and I have come to the conclusion that it is useless.
How are you suppost to know what articles are out of date and what articles work. I think someone needs to go into TDN and just delete everything that is outdated.
But then there wouldnt be much left in the TGB section?
Anyways just frustrated since I cant tell whats useful info to learn and whats crap.

Actualy I dont even own TGB. Im testing it as a potential engine for a startup studio. Its simply frustrating that I have a week to test the torque and yet it may be a great engine that I simply can't test properly.

The demo version should have the documentation with it. Have you used the docs that came with it? Are you having problems with the tutorials?

Well actualy I just looked into the tutorials and found that the particle effects from starter resource's don't work.

1.6 was just released. It seems that that section of the tutorial was not updated. You can go through a good chunk of it to get an understanding of how the particle editor works, though it will look somewhat different since the source assets are not where it expects. The files are there, but the builder isn't loading them.

I agree, the documentation and the few samples are not enough.

The awesome thing about TDN is if you have questions like this and TDN is incomplete or wrong, you can change it and fix it once you find the answer.

Regarding your issue with particles... I'm assuming you are using the "TutorialBase" project? If so, when you are inside that project open up your resource menu (Ctrl + R or Project -> Resources) and add the "particlesArt" resource, this didn't properly get saved in the release. This should allow the majority of the particles to load correctly.

We are currently working on getting some of our older examples up to date as well as getting some additional examples. Regarding your issue with particles... ParticlesArt doesnt exist. the only art resource's in the trail are checkersdemo and starterart

Hmm, I just grabbed the trial and saw the resources, are you running a TGB 1.6 trial?

Tony - yes.. while the fact that TDN is a wiki based system and is editable is fine... it is not really that helpful as a resource if the information is consistently wrong or outdated.. The last edit I've witnessed in TDN was may months ago... and basically didn't even update the tutorial.. but rather stated that the information was simply out of date! TDN in its current form is not a reliable resource.

It's been edited several times this week. Were you looking at a specific area that was perhaps updated those many months ago?

@Pest126
First, you're exaggerating when you say it is consistently wrong or outdated.
If it's so wrong or outdated, why do I see your contribution count as a big fat zero?
I think you missed my point. The fact that it's a wiki wasn't the point.
Torque Developer Network is a Wiki hosted by Garage Games so that the developers using Torque can maintain and share knowledge and tidbits of information they have learned about Torque while using it.
If you see something wrong, the cool thing about TDN is you, the person who discovered that it's incorrect can fix it. Don't just complain about it being wrong.
In fact, from my point of view, not only can you fix it, you have the responsibility of fixing it!
If you don't, then you are not part of the developer network and you're nothing more than a leech.

Perhaps you don't see anything from me.. because I'm not an experienced enough user to add to the wiki.. I'm trying to get my feet wet and trying to learn as much as I can from the resources available. C#/C++/XNA has many resources including hundreds of books and numerous web sites... Torque basically has the forums.. a single book and TDN. That's all folks.. any something specifically for TGB.. nada.
I did notice you have also not contributed anything (unless the search doesn't work either)... same question?
Also.. based on what I then see at TDN for TX.. either there aren't very many users using TX (and TXB) or perhaps no one wants to use the wiki? 7 articles for Tx and 1 for TXB - you might want to put the word out there to all the users that they are missing out on their "responsibility"..

I probably could be doing a better job, so touche on that point.
TDN came out a bit late for me. My best learning experiences I that could've put into a Wiki for others to use are lost... I've forgotten most of the questions I had back when I was first learning things so I don't really even know where to start.
The only article that I think I should write right now might be "How to use STL in Torque" and/or "Disabling the Torque Memory Manager." I get asked those two questions about once a month and instead of answering the questions via e-mail I should write a TDN article or two.
I'm not much part of that portion of the community so I don't even know who is using it. I think I have a license for TXB and TGB Pro, but I've not really done much with them.
What you need is a community champion for TXB / TX to take the bull by the horns and spearhead some TDN articles. I was expecting someone like Justin DuJardin to pick things up, but I've not seen a blog from him in about 8 months so I dunno what he's up to nowadays.
Anyways, good luck and Happy Torquing!

Most things I've read on TDN that actually helped me were complete and correct. I have created / modifieda few entries in places where I felt things were lacking.I probably could be doing a better job, so touche on that point.

Ok.. true enough.. I don't want to cause trouble.. just so disappointing by GG and their lack of pushing / creating a community. If a community won't build itself.. then GG should just take over and provide the service.. IMO.

If you are a new person and looking for instant gratification, try the code packs. 90% of them are now updated and have forums that give implicate instructions how to do so. As for whats useful, thats something thats a matter of opinion, i even pull out Tribes 1 code for reference some times. I recommend maybe picking up the Torque for teens if your looking for a on hand reference guide, as its up to date.
But yah, GG has promised they are upgrading things. But other then opening code up, a few new TDN pages(most of which are user created) there are a lot of bugs. They still havent cleaned up the TLK private forums for 1.4.2, 1.5.2, afx users. There are a bunch of resources for TLK thats are still not available.
Hang in there, and remember if your new, start small, dont start thinking your going to make WoW or EQ on the first day out. Read the forums, there are lots of fixes and code that works.
