School talk on Games

by Sam Redfern · in General Discussion · 12/18/2007 (5:31 am) · 5 replies

I have to give a short talk tomorrow to some school kids who are visiting our university to learn about our degrees (I lecture in an I.T. Department, where we teach a lot of software development but not a whole lot of specialist graphics/games dev.). I have been asked to talk about the games industry, so I'm hoping there's some useful ideas or links that other people have here for me to use...

I have been specifically asked to address:

1. Career options in the games industry
2. Future trends

But if there's anything else you can think of, please let me know.... they're aged 17.

thanks...
Sam.

Gamasutra.com, and the news and articles section of gamedev.net should be quite helpful as an overview.

www.gamecareerguide.com/

I find this site to be pretty useful.

All good ideas. My advice too is to make the presentation as interactive as possible. Get people to ask questions if you can. Listen to what they know and cater the talk to the careers they might be more interested in. Bring in your own experience too.

The talk was yesterday, but thanks anyway James and Deborah ;) It went well, they seemed most interested in hearing about my own game actually. Heh.
