Starter.FPS "memory could not be read
by Ron Sawyer · in Site Feedback · 12/03/2007 (3:56 pm) · 9 replies
I purchased Torque a few weeks ago and was initially very excited about it. However, the engine seems quite buggy. Sometimes the Starter.FPS runs perfectly. Other times, like tonight, it crashes immediately with a message:
The instruction at "0x77f580c9" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
This seems likely to be a null pointer issue, I suspect, but there is a lot of code to wade through to hunt this down.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there a quick and easy fix?
Thank you for your help!

If updating video doesn't help, update audio (use your computer's manufacturer website to find correct drivers).

I've seen more crashes due to the outdated sound drivers comparing to the video-related crashes. If updating video doesn't help, update audio (use your computer's manufacturer website to find correct drivers).

I appreciate all the replies given.
Just out of curiosity, was this already asked and answered somewhere? (I hate asking questions I could have found answers to if I had looked hard enough.)

Kenneth, the video drivers *seem* to have fixed it. At least it is running smoothly tonight. (Good thing for me too, I have a demo to give.)I appreciate all the replies given.

Glad to hear your problem is resolved. :)

I'm sure it's come up once or twice before, but it's probably pretty hard to find considering the search function on these forums is pretty terrible. Fortunately we will have new forums at some point and searches should be much easier.Glad to hear your problem is resolved. :)

@ Ron: As Ken said, the search function on this site needs a major rehaul. Eric Fritz is working on website updates for next year, and it's a known issue. So more than likely, you did look hard enough, so thanks for your patience. ^_^

I appreciate the response. I just hate looking like newbie who didn't do his homework. (OK, when it comes to Torque I guess I am a newbie, but hopefully you know what I mean. :) )

You know I just received the same error - and it is on a terminal server box - will that be an issue for me? I kind of have to remote host this thing for commercial grade bandwidth and service. Is there a way to 'fake' the driver on the server so that it runs clean. Our server has limited graphics and I dont believe it has ANY sound card at all. Additional info on my situation: I am using the MMO kit alpha version for 1.5. Tried my 1.5 plain-vanilla and got the same error.

Let me know if this fixes the problem, I suspect it will.
